been playing dust for a while and the whole time I thought to myself
WTF is with strafing in this game??
first off.. for me fun does equal a more realistic game feeling... ie soldiers do not strafe nor do they rush head long into a hail of bullets. that is not realistic therefore it is not as fun as using flanking maneuvers, cover, bound and cover etc. I am a more SWAT, or the new ghost recon coming out game style of tactical maneuvering.
so for me any kind of strafing, bunny hopping or any other behavior found in quake, half life, cod, BF, etc etc. is not what I like to play..
so this is a simple call of numbers for a game wide preference of game play
realistic game play - no strafe, no bunny hops, no acrobatics
unrealistic game play - strafing, bunny hopping, acrobatics
just want to know what the community prefers and do we have a split? could mean options for CCP to have a couple new game modes... make them "ultra real".. all normal earth physics at work, strafe disabled, bunny hopping nerfed. have ambush and domination maps, as well as a faction ultra real level.
so please respond with either REALISTIC OR UNREALISTIC that way my curiosity is answered.. thanks. |

This game needs no realism as it is a futuristic game and too much realism will be harmful.

This game would become nothing but a competition of HP vs DPS without evasive manouvers. Heavies would win every time.
Strafing, jumping, hopping, and all forms of evasive movement need to stay. |

In the future the rules of physics do not apply. In the future space ships fly on fairy dust and hope, not fuel and energy. In the future people can move around without spending energy because what the hell its the future.

Except of course that the fact heavies are slow as hell would be come a more concrete fact, on the flip side engaging at your range using cover would also become more standard. Of course in my opinion maneuverability should always exist but there should be a focus on that there is such thing as physics.

In case you haven't noticed, this game is nothing but open fields and cornered hallways. Corners make terrible cover when leaning isn't possible. |

When Earth, district whatever, becomes our battle location we can employ Earth physics. Meanwhile, remember that you are not on Earth so expecting physical behaviours to be identical is a mistake.
Edit: Strafing in here is a *****, yes, you are correct.

You can't deny the earth like qualities that exist in the planets we play on. For example when we shoot our guns we hear sound which means there is an atmosphere, when a grenade explodes there is fire and when a combat rifle shoots there is a orange flash this suggest oxygen; the fact the entire planet doesn't explode from shooting a projectile weapon means the concentration of oxygen is low. There is an existence of plant life with chlorophyll, this means gravity is high enough for roots to penetrate the ground and the presence of co2, or something similar for plants to complete their photosynthesis cycle.
With all this in mind we can establish the atmosphere is similar to that of earth's. Applying that logic to a drop suit when we jump out of the mmc we don't accelerate extremely fast which means the components of our suits are extremely light. So weight of the suit, or any mechanics augmenting and compensating for the weight can be dismissed. So this means moving in a drop suit would be like moving your body on earth so physics should exist.

Soldiers (at least in the American Army) are trained to strafe quickly in real life. Whether that has an actual use besides building up muscle or being able to remember to stage successfully in battle, is another story. Those soldiers are fighting for life and death so all types of thoughts and emotions are running through their head. Not all can think like we can because we are in a comfortable environment free from any life threatening situation. |

How would you possibly remove strafing? Isn't moving side to side a valid way of combat movement?

Would people with no understanding of physics stop making claims like "it's ok because it's not on earth and therefore earth physics do not apply."
First. It is theorized that the laws of physics MAY differ in other universes, not planets.
Second. If the laws of physics were different, humans would not survive simply because things wouldn't work the way we need them to in order to function. For example, 1+1=3. Doesn't sound like much, but that would kill you if it were true.
What percentile of Dust514's infantry arsenal belongs to the category of machine guns?

Stop with the physics crap. Its a videogame set in a fictional universe where spaceships move like submarines and don't follow Newtonian physics at all.
If you want a realistic game, go play one, there are other games out there. |

Let's not forget the fact that strafing whether now or in the past effectively became a needed technique with a low skill ceiling undermining tactical play by allowing bad players not to be punished for lousy positioning |

Unrealistic realism. That's what's actually been promoted in CCP promotional videos of Dust. We mercs are clones that can transfer consciousness at the moment of death (space magic) which means our battle maneuvers can be much more bold because the only detriments of death are team resources and your pocket book, not your actual life.

Earth-like=/=Earth. Similiar, but different.
Study enough physics and eventually you will hit the parts where 1+1 can=3.
I wish I had a video capture unit for the pc I was in (bridge map w/the sandcrawler structures) and I was under the sandcrawler, there was a scout on top of the sandcrawler I had lit by my passives and we OB'd the sandcrawler to kill him and get rid of their links+hives and he STRAFED THROUGH IT. And I don't mean he ran away, or strafed away from it. I mean he danced around in the epicenter and lived with enough hp to jump down and kill our speedhacker.
