I just noticed that there is an aim assist option in the settings, and i tried it out. I didnt see a difference in the aiming mechanics of the game or my accuracy...Does anyone or a dev actually know what aim assist does help with??
I see alot of talk about it but i dont see any changes using it :/ |

Aim assist is a myth like beluga caviar and freedom of speech.

The only thing it adds is bullet magnetism if you aim. EDIT: Just strafe and DON'T AIM. You will see a difference.

So far I've noticed that alot of the times I don't have to touch the right stick at all at close range when using aim assist, the game will do all the aiming for me. The farther the target is, the less it seems to be doing the aiming for the player.

if you are using the plc, or sniper rifle there will be no difference they are exempt weapons. if you use kb/m you wont see a difference as it was put there to help ds3 users compete with the kb/m.
other than that, fire from the hip don't ads and you will see a difference. |

I see alot of talk about it but i dont see any changes using it :/ Aim assist only slightly boosts your accuracy. A few days ago, I was aiming at a light with an ishukone rail rifle, and I didnt shoot yet because i only had a few bullets left and didnt want to miss. As I was aiming, my aim slightly moved along with the player as he shuffled back and forth. Hope it helped.

They are right, when they say "Aim Assist" is a Pandora's Box, and the subject of some hatful arguments sometimes.
The best part of the "Aim Assist" is the democratic option the game gives you to "turn it OFF" or "turn it ON". No joke; it's not required to get good in the game, but it helps you if you are NOT an addict to Dust who has a lot of uninterrupted time to spend practicing this game.
If you're a FPS champion, turn it OFF,... you will only find it "pushing your gun off the target" and messing with your mind.
If you're a nervous shooter, unconfident shooter (like me), or you're a gamer who just plays this on the weekends from time to time, turn it ON,... and then forget that you have it on. Aim Assist works best when you are NOT trying to consciously depend on it.
It tends to try "automatically locking on the target for you" ONLY within a close-to-medium distance from your victim... IF your opponent is quite far from you (or close enough to slap your face), Aim-Assist is designed NOT to help you.
It will do this auto locking on target" will ALMOST NEVER activate when you put your eye to the weapon and aim down the gunsight. Whenever YOU force your gun to aim, Aim-Assist tries not to interferre with you (...umm, TRIES not to).
Anti-Personnel weapons (AV weapons), Shotguns, locus/flux grenades of course, and equipment (uplinks, shucks...) DON'T have any Aim Assist helping them----you have to aim those weapons yourself using whatever electronic or eyeball sights those weapons come with.
And moving your body as you shoot your weapon TENDS TO make the Aim-Assist STOP helping you---it seems to DEACTIVATE the Aim-Assist during that gunfight. Standing still, and firing from the hip, seems to be the best way to maximize what Aim-Assist is trying to do for you.
Notice, in all the above examples, Aim-Assist is TRYING NOT to be noticeable. It's working best for you, when you don't feel it's there at all. When you try to aim on you're own, there are moments when it doesn't relinquish your gun to you quick enough--and you get the feeling it's "fighting you". That's when most of us players complain. And that's the reason you SHOULD either play with it turned OFF if you're a super-experienced shooter palyer, OR decide to turn it ON and leave it on foreverafter, so you'll eventually be no longer conscious of it.
I actually like it, but hey, don't get fixated on it during the fight---it works best when you're not trying to analyse what it's doing for you.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

Try an experiment....
Get a buddy, make a custom channel, and each of you join opposite sides in a factional warfare round.
Go to a quiet corner of the map, and use a weapon with AA (like the RR or the AR), and just play. Have the other player move across your aiming reticule at several different distances and in several suits (with differing movement speeds) and watch your crosshairs (in both ADS and hipfire) magnetize. Fire off a few shots while it's happening. Try it while you are moving and standing still. Try it while moving your aim stick and while it's steady.
You'll quickly get a feel for what AA does and does not do in this game.
I think you'll find the AA in this game to be quite tame. |

AA is something that elite players complain about but is worse in most games. I think they do it to make people turn it off so they can kill them faster, lol.

I played borderlands 2 as a short break from dust a while back and compared to it, dust has almost no aim assist. I was actually wondering recently if they dialed it back even more because when I was straffing I noticed no aim assist (or I was aiming too much myself) |

It's funnily enough one of those things that makes you better when you are bad and makes you worse when you are good. For some weapons like hmgs it turns them on easy mode but for the most part I find its best to just learn to aim without it.
Pros: When you are new to the game it helps you to stay on target.
Cons: It screws up your aiming and often stops you from lead shotting when playing twirling ballerinas in CQC, which is pretty much what the git gud crowd do. It also screws up your aiming if someone moves in front of your target as it will suddenly track on to the new guy and often cost you the kill when dealing with a 3 on 1 situation.
If you have been doing fine with it off all this time, I would advise you to turn it back off. |

If anything it makes my aim worse... But isn't this 'on' by default? maybe that's why you didn't notice anything. |

Aim assist always screws me over. Like I'll have the perfect shot on someone while I'm in a Sica and for (what was previously unknown) some reason my crosshair kept moving down and was soooooo irritating. |
