Did you know causing a DDoS attack can be as simple as sending a single email? It's true. You can, also, pay petty money for people to do it. The only thing about these attacks, is that there is no actual counter for it available right now, so it always succeeds.

LizardSquad said they did it to show that Sony isn't putting money from their customers into protecting against DDoS attacks. But, they also said they did this in honor of ISIS, so I wouldn't take their word for it.

DPLAK DDoS is basically overloading a system with so much junk like login requests and such until a critical limit is hit and the server can't handle any more. So it shuts down. Every single server has this critical limit, all it takes is reaching it. No one has successfully DDoSed Amazon because no one has hit that magic number yet. There servers are huge, so its not so much they can't, but that no one has tried hard enough. Rest in peace, oh Captain, my Captain.

DPLAK This is because the big dogs (Amazon, Microsoft, Google) have an architecture in place that allows them to scale out their applications to meet demand. Basically, these companies have invested significantly in "the cloud" and they have more horsepower available to them than the DDOS perpetrators have. As demand/volume increases (whether it's from a DDOS or just regular business usage), additional virtual machines are spooled up to deal with the requests. They are not really countering the DDOS attack, they are simply able to handle the volume. How do you kill that which has no life?
