The world will end. It would be pretty bad, and could trigger a pretty horrific chain of events, but it would take a perfect storm of events to cause the end of the world. The US would certainly be turned upside down though. The map would never look the same again. Extremely unlikely especially when considering the following: 1. The United States Government has already prepared for these kind of eventualities which include a plan called "continuity of government". There are even secret bunkers designed to protect the entire US Government from both a nuclear attack and from a global catastrophic disaster while still being able to run the country from these things which also include command centers for the President and his staff. 2. Europeans already have similar plans. I forgot which nation has this, but there is a special bunker that houses and preserves all of the known seeds from around the world in the event that a global disaster causes failures in crops which is what every nation in the world already depends on for both survival and economic influence.
There are several seed banks, afghanistan was one was recently ransacked. The seed banks are more of a genetic foundry than a repopulation effort considering how damaging hyper capitalism has an effect on agriculture. Case in point there used to be hundreds of more apple varieties in the world, now we only have a small handful left because it is what is demanded. The lack of variety in consumed plants is becomming their downfall as well. Most recently (again) bannana which are cloned naturally (most don't have seeds) are down to mostly one variety and now there is a fungal virus threatening to wipe them all out similarly to what happened back in the 50s I think when we used to have much much much sweeter bananas (the one the candy flavor is based off of)
