After seeing some whining about the new scope I decided to put a point in and try it out to see what all the fuss is about. I lobe the new scope, so much that i got an NT 11 and am enjoying the challenge.
Redline sniping is really boring so I put it on a cal commando for the damage and light weapon but I don't like being slow. So I cooked up a cal scout fit to do some "Vassili zaitsev" sniping.
Any tips for a rookie sniper?

I hate it. I sniper a lot and the new scope is confusing and difficult to use for me. I feel like it's become harder to snipe since I have no clue that the scope actually means. It just doesn't feel right.

Recommended firing platforms for sniper rifles:
Caldari commando: You get a bonus to damage from railguns while you punch holes through the heads of redline snipers and crappy campers. This suit makes an excellent add-in for an assault push when you run rail rifle + Sniper Rifle with the added bonus of being able to eliminate enemy snipers, laser rifles and pansy campers on the fly. I like to think of it's suppression role as "Counter-sniper."
Any Assault: Seriously. Don't bricktank. Fit for basic tank and damage mods. Use patience, and crouch first.
Finally don't be a cheesedick. Come out of the red line and don't camp on locations where only dropships can go. |

I find that kind of sniping very boring, I much rather prefer to be down close to the action and help wherever I can. I like the calmando fit but I really need a squad to help support me because I'm slightly chubby. I am currently using it on my cal scout and i am really enjoying it. I take most of my shots standing up as I am always on the move a pretty close to the action.

There we go.
Yeah the new circle appears to be only useful at super close ranges. That's the only real positive feedback we've seen so far. Thank you for clarifying why you like it.

The way to succeed with the calmando is to stay with a squad, then when snipers start becoming a problem, peel off and find a nice out of the way spot to locate and murder them. Then waddle your chubby ass back to the group once you're finished assassinating redline retards and deploy the rail rifle.
Commandos really are fairly on par with the current iteration of assault.

I find it useful for ranged sniping too, I'd say as far out as 500m. The only thing I don't like it for is max range redline sniping, but since I find that boring I don't mind. My Thales sniping buddy doesn't seem to have any issues, in fact I'd say he has gotten better.

First of all congrats on lobing your rifle. This is a must for any sniper. You must lobe it to death.
Secondly, SMG with a tanked scout suit (this was before he cloak) is pretty good.
Working from the redline is not the problem contrary to SNIPOPHOBES. It is about getting in an effective position. Many times it might be in or just off the redline to get a good cross fire. Case in point is Manus Peak.

Two CPX damage mods and a charge is finally kinda viable again.
That was my first ever sniper fit on my Scout G/1-Series. I've never changed it (except when scouts got a buff, I put on a STD CarReg and Kincat and upgraded nanohives). It's never let me down.
Use Tacticals for counter-sniping. Three headshots in quick succession will kill almost anything out there. |

Secondly, SMG with a tanked scout suit (this was before he cloak) is pretty good. You can run a nano and link if not running a cloak and truly scout ahead and drop a forward link for team. Working from the redline is not the problem contrary to SNIPOPHOBES. It is about getting in an effective position. Many times it might be in or just off the redline to get a good cross fire and a good view. Case in point is Manus Peak. Actually, there are other points there, but some are higher risk/higher reward.
On this map, scout snipers rule because you can constantly keep changing position and unless you make noise or are seen, you'll be below enemy radar. |

sniper rifles are not hitscan. there's bullet travel. You have to lead the target. |

This came to mind.
Heavies survive 3x Tactical headshots. Commandos survive 2x Tactical headshots (and a missed body shot)
If you have a pulse, and there isn't lag, you'll never get triple tapped in the head with a tactical.
Also the new sight isn't going to allow you to triple headshot anything moving.
The increase to damage mods from 5% to 7% has added somewhere between 12-20 damage per shot. It's not something that makes any noticeable difference. Not on shots per kill, not on alpha strike damage.
If you have to keep moving you're not ruling anything. That's less time spent killing, and you're increasing your chances of being seen. The mobile sniper although fun, has a low kill count, and even less war points.

I get more warpoints killing snipers with my sniper rifle than I ever do trying to snipe assaults and Logis. |

Here's a fun happy circle of revenge.
They try to snipe, I kill them they give up and either
a) go play with the rest of the cogs on the ground b) try to hunt me down with a drop ship
They try to infantry, I kill them they give up and either
a) change to sniping, and get themselves killed again b) try to hunt me down with a drop ship
Anyway, having the higher ground is generally best for sniping. Vantage point and cover.

Do not skill any higher than you have. Its not worth it. I run a Thale for it was the only viable sniper rifle in the game until the scope issue. I was looking forward to the new scope but after trying it, it is crap compared to the old one and that is saying something because the old one was S***.
I like your idea, try CR and sniper rifle combo. Keep moving, never stay still for long, use clone centers and other installations to snipe from for their shields will cover you. Another tip is use the Compact Hive. It will heal and recoup your ammo and the cherry on top is it has a very small bubble and others will have a hard time seeing it if you put it behind some cover.
Message me in game and I will go sniping with you and I can show you all the sweet spots.

so much advice for a sniper from people who clearly don't understand what it is,
according to some of these posts a good sniper: 1.stays close to his squad who are using mid-short range weaponry. 2.stays low to the ground (i assume using his x-ray sights and bullets that can turn corners) 3.spends at least 50% of his time running around
my best advice for you would be ignore the above "advice" snipers are not supposed to be close range ground troops.
only exception was the one about using the commando with a rail.. that is good advice if you intend to run a commando with a sniper rifle as a secondary weapon.
(but then i have a feeling you don't really need sniping advice, maybe i'm just feeling jaded by the anti sniper threads lately but i can't help thinking of the first goat that walks into the slaughter house-and how it normally walks back out) |
