The important thing to get is laser weaponry so you can crush chryssalids successfully. I thought it sped up research time on some thing or another? And I got the laser rifle, but Chrysallids are eating two or three shots from it. It didn't have the stopping power to save Lt. Cass P. (with the triple medkit that revives at 33% hp) or Llast (who was a rookie with an AR and Arc thrower at the time...) from becoming zombies 
Doesn't do diddly squat to tech.
Nabbing other aliens though does. Each one gives you "research credits" to certain things.
