Last Tuesday (8/5) my wife went in to have a golf ball-sized kidney stone removed. It's now Monday (8/11) and she's in the ICU hooked up to a ventilator--life support, in other words. It would appear that the initial surgery to place the needle and tubes into her kidney (done without anesthesia, mind you) to allow them to break apart the stone and remove it resulted in them piercing through her diaphragm, which allowed the saline solution they used to "flush" out the stone fragments to seep into her chest cavity. This, in turn, prevented her lungs from expanding properly and resulted in her not getting the oxygen that she needed. Described it as a "partial collapse" of both lungs, so she's been on the ventilator since Wednesday having the machine breathe for her. Worst of all, there's been almost ZERO communication between the medical staff and myself. Fortunately, I had family arrive on Sunday so I could finally spend some time with my wife in the ICU--children under 12 aren't allowed in the rooms and I have two girls (9 and 3) so I couldn't just leave them alone in the waiting room or at home. We are lucky to have some great friends in the area that have been able to come in and keep my wife company during the times when I can't be there, but the medical staff hasn't been any more forthcoming with them than with me, despite giving them clear consent that they can be informed of what's happening so that they can relay the info to me.
D*mn...both Wednesday and Thursday I was told, "Hopefully she can go home tomorrow." Yeah, that hasn't happened. Today the ventilator is pumping out 50% oxygen compared to the 100% she was on Friday and her oxygen levels are holding pretty steady at 95 or so (should be at 100 for a healthy person, for comparison.) Tomorrow, they hopefully--there's that word again--begin the actual process of weaning her off the ventilator and having her breathe on her own, but they're concerned about the amount of fluid in her lungs (typically seen in pneumonia, which my wife didn't have before the surgery.)
Oh, and the guy in the room next to her died today. Was getting ready to leave for the night when they brought out his bed with a blue cover over it that was made to look like a box. You'd think it was a janitor or something...creepy as hell to know that there was a dead body mere feet away from me, covered only by a heavy piece of cloth, a body that had been living just minutes ago.
Anyways...just needed to vent a little. Doubt I'll be on Dust very much this week but I hope to see you all in the near future!
(And yes, I'm aware of the irony of this situation, given my username.)

Same here. Shittiest week of my life as well.
Cousin died. There are alot of unanswered questions to whether it really was an accident or if foul play was involved. I fainted. My heart is not pumping enough blood to my brain causing me to want to pass out. Well I have been feeling tired for a while and I guess the emotional stress pushed me to the point of actually fainting. I have to go to the funeral on thursday.

Update: Nothing new. Really. Still in the hospital, still on the ventilator and still don't know why. Just met with the chief medical officer and the head of the nursing department to discuss some of our concerns. Friend of ours actually filed a complaint with the patient advocate after overhearing a couple of nurses make disparaging comments about my wife and her--they apparently assumed that they were a lesbian couple she was there all of the time (I couldn't be there due to not having anyone to watch our girls until my parents came in from out of town.) Needless to say, the nurses have been much more polite and responsive to our requests since the complaint was filed and forwarded to their bosses.
Performed a bronchoscopy of my wife today and took some cultures to check for pneumonia. Looks like it'll be Monday before they even try to wean her off of the ventilator...

It only took until today (8/22) to get my wife off of life support. Huzzah!!!
"Bilateral pneumonia" is the official diagnosis, which is basically pneumonia of both lungs. Why did this suddenly appear after undergoing surgery to remove a kidney stone? Doctors have no idea, other than "It happens." Funny how she almost immediately improved after removing her from Propofol sedation (the stuff used on Michael Jackson) due to the high lipid content causing high levels of triglycerides in her blood; her oxygen saturation levels increased and her breathing decreased within an hour of having the continuous (IV) sedative removed. Hell, they only used the intermittent sedative (injected one dose at a time into a PICC line) twice after taking her off of the Propofol, so it looks as though the Propofol may have been the culprit in all of this considering the fact that the chest x-rays have shown little difference during this time.
So, yeah...after 16 days I've finally been able to hear my wife speak and kiss her on the lips. Probably have a bit of physical therapy to look forward to as she's too weak to even stand on her own, but hopefully she'll be transferred out of the ICU tomorrow and I can finally bring our daughters in to see her.
Thanks to all of you for your support!!!

8/23 Well, we're finally out of the Intensive Care Unit and now have a regular room. Had to perform an MRI today (results will come in tomorrow) to check for signs of a clot or evidence of a stroke in her brain, as her left hand is significantly weaker than her right. Her left leg doesn't seem all that different from her right, so I'm hoping that the MRI comes back clean. Either way, have a minimum of a few days before she can come home, and only after she shows good progress in her physical therapy.
All in all a good day, particularly as she got to see our daughters for the first time in 17 days.

MRI came back clean and my wife is able to read without any problem. Having a hard time with writing, but there was noticeable difference between her attempts this morning compared to later in the evening. She's also able to cover short distances with the aid of a walker.

8/26: Spent the night at the hospital with my wife last night after she had woken up in the morning and was angry that I wasn't there--she had forgotten that I told her I'd be there after dropping off our oldest daughter at school. Rest of the day went pretty smoothly. Today, she was finally transferred to a rehab facility and it doesn't look as though she's going to be there very long; her cognitive abilities are coming back quickly and she's already able to walk short distances without a walker. She did, however, drop a bombshell on me--when looking at the nurse's notes the other day, she saw where she had "coded" at one point before/during/after the surgery. "Coded" being another way of saying "stopped breathing and was unresponsive." Dead, in other words.
Fortunately, that all seems to be past us now and we can work towards bringing her home, possibly as early as tomorrow night. We've already heard from her employer (they've made three attorneys available to us) as well as the wife of a coworker who happens to be a lawyer and is willing to work pro bono. Waiting to collect all of the medical records from this little adventure as there seems to be massive amounts of confusion as what exactly happened (the pneumonia diagnosis apparently isn't "official") and why, the night after the surgery, the medical logs show that she went over twelve hours without being given pain medication despite asking for it (to the point where the nurses threatened to call security and had her restrained in the bed.) Who knew that a (possible, we don't have the medical records yet) punctured diaphragm would hurt so bad?
Oh, and best of all...having a friend of ours overhear the nurses in the ICU making snide comments about the two of them being lesbians and me not knowing about it, and how they didn't want to be the ones to treat my wife as a result. Yeah...let's just say that several employees at this hospital have found themselves either without a job or no longer having privileges to work at hospital in question after our friend filed a complaint with the patient advocate and our eventual meeting with the Chief Medical Officer to discuss our treatment and the care my wife was receiving.
But really, that's all something to worry about in the future. Right now we're just focused on getting my wife back home as soon as possible.

8/30 Been a good week so far, and we're seeing daily improvement. Insurance will let us stay up to the 5th at the rehab institute, but I don't know if they'll even keep her that long. She's doing well physically (we can walk around the building--it's 15 stories and connected to the rest of the main hospital center--as well as go outside and walk along the sidewalk) and mentally she's doing pretty well on her testing. Struggles a bit with working memory, but that can be treated with outpatient therapy (which would allow her to come back home.)
Scary thing, though, came up today when she told me that she could remember dying. Seriously. She remembers them going in to place the needle into her kidney when she jerked--mind you, this was without being fully sedated--and she can remember a "popping" sensation (which would be the needle going through her diaphragm) followed the sensation of drowning as liquid flowed into her chest cavity and prevented her lungs from expanding. She couldn't breathe and began thrashing around, which resulted in the medical staff forcefully restraining her. It was one of the anesthesiologists that finally noticed that she wasn't breathing.
Also learned that the need for rehab--caused by "metabolic encephalopathy"--was likely a result of her not being placed on a feeding tube for nearly a week after being hooked up to the ventilator. Needless to say, we'll be contacting a few lawyers when all of this over and she finally comes home.

SHE'S HOME SHE'S HOME SHE'S HOME SHE'S HOME SHE'S HOME Almost one month later, she's finally home!!!
Will have outpatient rehab twice a week for about seven hours each day, but they don't think she'll be doing it for very long. Had a nice lunch together (along with my parents and our youngest daughter) and now she's resting in our bed. We'll have a nice celebratory dinner tonight and take things as they come moving forward. Pretty bad when even the therapists (they have copies of her medical records) are mentioning, "You really should have a lawyer look at these files." Looks like someone F'd up BIG time.

It gets better: Received a phone call from Liberty Mutual today--they're the ones handling the short-term disability claim. The person handling our case asked if my wife was ready to return to work; the head doctor from the ICU had stated that she'd be ready to return to work by now. Mind you, he was also of the opinion that she should have gone straight home from the hospital and not to rehab!
In the end, the agent spoke with the doctor that oversaw her in-patient rehab and when asked if my wife was ready to return to work, the doctor laughed and let them know that my wife suffered a mild form of "traumatic brain injury" and that her return to work will be a gradual process made under the supervision of a vocational therapist. Either the ICU doctor was trying to cover his own a$$ or is completely clueless is open to debate.

9/18 Wife will be returning to work starting on the 22nd; will work twenty hours that week and, if everything goes well, will be back to a full-time schedule the following week. Will have to take a test in the future to have her driver's license medically cleared, but overall is doing great and it doesn't appear as though there will be any bad lasting effects. She is, however, now on a pretty strict diet of one serving of meat a day, along fruit/veggies at every meal having to drink at least two liters of water everyday--she already had another kidney stone forming around the stent when it was removed last week!
Tomorrow we'll have our first face-to-face meeting with our attorney and set the groundwork for what we're going to do moving forward.

10/21 Things are going well. Wife has returned to work full-time and has had her driving privileges restored. Have signed all of the paperwork with the attorneys are now letting the legal process play out; looks as though it'll actually be two separate lawsuits--one for her actual medical handling and the other for discrimination when the nurses refused to treat her because they thought she was a lesbian.
Has a cystoscopy scheduled for tomorrow; the doctor is worried about a possible blood clot having formed in her bladder following the removal of her stent a few weeks ago. Also mentioned that she had been treated for "acute renal failure" during her time in the hospital. Gee, sure would have been nice if any of the doctors had mentioned that to us at some point!
One thing that we've discovered is that many of the issues that placed my wife into rehab (remember, the intensive care doctor was ready to send her straight home with oxygen!) are very typical of potassium toxicity (weakness of the muscles, heart arrhythmia, etc.) Oh, and that whole deal with Joan Rivers' death being a result of Propofol? Yeah, that's the stuff my wife spent 15 days on!!!
