It would be nice for vehicles to have a purpose in Legion beyond just slaying infantry and other vehicles. Destroying other vehicles is a good purpose provided that those vehicles you destroy had a purpose for being on the battlefield in the first place. I am going to list my ideas. Please add your own ideas to this thread.
Vehicles tasks:
- Carrying Salvage.
- Destroying gates and armoured doors.
- Portable (destructible) Null Cannons
Carrying Salvage:
I propose that there should be a realistic limit on how much salvage we can carry ourselves using our dropsuits. In order to collect a lot of salvage in the Salvage grounds we should have to box up our salvage and place it in a vehicle for transport. (Boxing it would allow it to survive if the vehicle is blown up.) This gives vehicles the task of carrying salvage, and also gives anti vehicle vehicles a purpose for destroying salvage barring vehicles in order to steal the salvage.
Destroying gates and armoured doors:
I would love to see destructible buildings, but that is quite a big ticket item from a development perspective. However, I think it would be much more reasonable to star small and create destructible doors.* These would come in 4 sizes.
- Office door. (HP of a Sentinel)
- Armoured Door. (HP of a LAV)
- Garage Door. (Larger. HP of a LAV)
- Armoured Gate. (Wide enough to block streets. HP of a HAV)
A defender/attacker scenario can be created by giving defenders control of the doors at the beginning of the match. Using a HAV would be a quick way for attackers to quickly gain access to compounds. Remote Explosives and AV could be used too. Hacking should be an option too, but the Armoured Doors should take a long time to Hack.
* They could get away with just creating one distructable modle for each door size, and just changing the colour to match the archetecural style of the racial socket they are placed in.
Portable (destructible) Null Cannons:
I am thinking in a Planetary Conquest scenario where the attackers bring in Portable Null Cannons (PNC) to take out the shields on the District Command Centre (DCC). I envision PNCGÇÖs as being very large, slow, trucks with Null Cannons on them. Have the Health very high, but with no anti Infantry or anti Vehicle capability so they would have to be protected. Have a terminal on the side so they can be hacked as well.
District attackers would deploy PNCGÇÖs to help take the district. The Defenders would deploy vehicles with large and small turrets to try to take them out. The Attackers would deploy vehicles to fend off the defenderGÇÖs vehicles.
District Defenders might deploy PNCGÇÖs to take out the attacking MCC, but this would be a risk as they could be hacked ant turned against the DCC.

I like the concept of weight per salvage mission or operation, which could be based primarily on the same concept of storage from the space game. A set limit that is open to upgrade based on vehicles and tiers and more parts. Interesting! This could all lead to manufacturing wayyyy down the road even in a F2P game.

I certainly love your idea about carrying salvage I can imagine ORE Salvager Vehicles being driven by players to sites for loot, being able to expand cargo capacity through modules, have scanners to find better loot sites, then rumble home to the extraction point with a loaded hull of nice new autotropes.....
As for Combat Vehicles.....in my case I speak of HAV since they are what I know..... I have always expressed my desire for them to look and feel powerful. They should be platforms for New Eden's largest ordinances. They should move slowly, heavily emphasis player skill and module activation, and when they fire it should fire slowly, hit hard, and have AoE........and the sound.....each round should sound be like a thunderstrike.
However to balance that HAV should need small turret gunners to effectively defend themselves frm infantry, and suffer unfrt close quarters AV fire.
Destroying other vehicles, destroying installations, breaking through fortifications and damaging important structures (MCC and what not).

I think he is referring to a specialized vehicle that would have a Mobile Clone Reanimation Unit (and a stock of clones), rather than an entire MCC.

Yes I like this very much.
I like to imagine that an entire planet, or at least 16% of it would be completely traversable with small loot caches many miles apart.
A faction, or random encounter programs, could generate AA turrets that do not allow craft to land in a certain zone, so to get from one zone to another, a group may have to land miles away form where the intend on going for a raid.
This land in between would be very dangerous for infantry, as cover is limited, so it would be beneficial to have armored vehicles to transport infantry across dangerous stretches of planets.
I also like the idea of having them carry cargo. If cargo was actually realistically massive, it would take a large vehicle to transport a large amount of items, therefore, Eve's version of cargo ships exists on the ground and is just as valuable.
Having vehicles that are fast and have a high DPS to disable said vehicles and raid convoys would create a kind of piracy on the planet's surface as well as in space.
Extraction vehicles which work much faster than personal tools would be awesome.
I like to imagine huge specialized AA vehicles which provide low atmosphere fires would be very interesting, as they could prevent an enemy faction from reinforcing the ground troops.
I like your idea. +1

Piracy on the ground would certainly be a good stimulus for free form PVP.

As in perhaps something more terrestrial.
Like a Super Heavy Command Centre/ Attack Vehicle.
I am thinking something the size of a building, 4 fixed angle Large Turrets and fitting space for a large variety of modules.
E.G - Imperator Command Vehicle
2x 180mm Plating 2x Armour Hardners 2x Armour Reppers 1x PG Enhancer
1x MCRU 1x Vehicle Scanner 1x Damage Module
Something that cost 50 million ISK to deploy and its stupidly big.
