 I'm be in favor of it being toned down, but it needs to be clearly visible so that AVers know when a hardener is active.

 The shine of the hardener makes front turret unusable from the gunners perspective.
 
 Obviously the effect needs to be seen by outside troops.
 
 If the hardener is active, I probably need my gunners most at that point.

I agree, it must be visible for the AVers, the problem is from the inside, in gunner seat, when the pilot activates hardeners it's disturbing for the gunner, because the aim reticule blend with the hardener effect.

 It's not so much the effect itself, but it seems to expand off the surface and block the gunners view.
