Not to mention when creating a character for the first time, the assumption needs to be that the player knows nothing about game. So you're basically saying the player needs to know what those "perks" of the race mean so he can make an informed choice before even getting to the actual gameplay. So a new player says "Oh, I'll get a discount to Gallente Weapons....what the hell is a Gallente Weapon?" but selects it anyways and later decides he doesn't like Gallente Weapons...well then he picked a race that doesn't benefit him at all, and is then encouraged to just scrap it and start over with a different race. Not good.
Starting skills is one thing, but permanent and unique perks to each race that cant be replicated by another race later just leads to frustrated new players that are forced to make critical choices before they even have the option to educate themselves on what the choices actually entail. |

So how is it immerse if you can change it later?
And after the academy? So they have all of 3 battles to try out everything in the game and make a critical, permanent, non changeable choice? Unique perks are bad, and should be avoided.
Now if you wanted to argue that certain races start off with certain skills trained, that's fine, because it doesn't have a permanent unchangeable effect. I personally run a mix of suits, Gallente Heavy, Minmatar Logi, Caldari Scout, and Amarr Assault. The racial variants on those roles happened to line up with how I like to play each of those roles, so should I suffer a disadvantage because I don't play every role under the same race? Does that really enhance my gameplay? or just pigeonhole is under the banner of "Immersion"
Immersion is great, but don't make it force people into a certain playstyle because its not as advantageous to do otherwise. New Eden is about flexibility, to remove that is really the opposite of immersion in my mind. |
