I guess missions in Legion have NPC (drones) as the enemy.
However, it would be great if real players can substitute the NPC where possible (not all the time though).
Example: Combat Mission: A mission is available to attack a Guristas base to obtain some stolen cargo. The base is filled with 16 (concurrent) NPC security drones which will "greet" the players. However, when the mission is accepted other players can jump in for the opposite side taking the role as "Guristas" pirates. So if 4 players join, there will be 12 security drones and 4 real players as a opposing force.
This should not be confused with my thread [Mission Mechanic Suggestion #2] Missions and "Counter-Missions", as this is slightly different.
1) You will receive a small ISK payout per kill from the faction you "work" for, in this case Guristas, and a bonus payment if you successfully prevent the other team from succeeding their mission.
2) More importantly, you will not have access to all your own gear and suites, but are limited to the already fitted default "Guristas Fighter suite". This means you can't jump in with (dust equivalent) full Proto and stomp poor blueberries in the ground. The suites should not have any racial or skill benefits, and you are just there as a "filler", a more dangerous and smarter opponent than a NPC.
I think this will give great variation on the types of activities available to you, and makes the missions much more interesting for the opposing team. |

Roger Cordill wrote:It seems as though you want a lobby shooter still. I ask why, as being a lobby shooter hurt dust in the first place.....
Anyways, this technically exists in EVE, but not in Hisec. Quite literally you can scan down a person doing a mission in lo or nullsec, go to them, and shoot at them, being able to kill them and salvage them for mad leut.
How is this better than a lobby? Well, you can choose when you want to drop in and where, and when, you can choose how many people you want to bring in. It also allows for people to bring in support if it's ready, or if it isn't, makes it to where there might be that exciting rush to get help if it's that important to get it.
Lastly, it allows for there still to be a spot (Hisec) to where you don't have to deal with this, because under your model, it's still allowed.
Honestly I am a bit confused with your comment. Perhaps we have different definition of lobby shooter, since I don't understand how you could come to this conclusion?
This particular topic is about the ability for you to swap out a NPC and play as the enemy during a ongoing player mission. There are no waiting times, no loading room, no queues, no "teams" that needs to be filled...
This is not a priority feature of any kind, just a nice to have. However, I thought I still suggest it as it does give some great benefits:
- Variation - gives a player something quick and different to do other than "mining", running missions etc.
- Trying out - Since the available suites are prefitted and can't be modified, but require no skill to use, it gives a great opportunity for new players to try out different concepts, and a challenge for old players.
- More Challenging - NPC in all it's glory, but nothing beats the presence of a human player.
- Immersion - This is actually the most important for me; When you infiltrate a Caldari Iron Works base (or whatever), you will actually be resisted by proper Caldari Iron Works "security forces", I.e dressed for the part. (Think how boring it would be if all the stormtroopers in Star Wars IV Death Star scene would all have different outfits?)
Apart from this, the same system could "potentially" be used in PC 2.0, whereupon a corporation can create generic defence clones to be used by everybody. (In case of an attack when no one is on?)
