at 15m SP I thought I would try to give myself the option of 3 different roles in one character. So I've just skilled into Scout suits and already I've enjoyed trying out cloaking and the extra fun you get playing solo..
But my fitting is pretty bog standard. What should I be putting on my dropsuit. Adv Gallente scout.. Appreciate any suggestions!

Shields in highs, dampeners, kincats and cardio regs in lows.
You have passive rep already, and only wankers armour tank.
It would seem like wisdom, but for the warning in my heart...

My first post on these forums :)
I have only been playing this game for a few weeks short of 6 months. When I first started I died so fast I felt I needed more HP just to learn the game - I ran militia heavy suits just for learning the ropes (this game is pretty hard if you don't know how the maps are laid out and where people might be coming from, or what points are of real interest (but that's a different issue altogether)). A few months back I decided to make another character which I'd like to try the scout with, focussing all the SP collected through games into pure scout things. I've barely touched my sentinel since..
I have no corp and only 2 friends who play this game as well but their timezones differ so I've adapted to solo play. I am nowhere near good enough to run a solo heavy properly or even any other character, but the scout is built for that purpose. You should defenitely have the cloak. It gives you an escape route if you make the wrong decision when engaging someone. Obviously running through an open field cloaked does you no good but in a city map or one with a lot of boxes on the ground, it rules. I can't remember how many times I ran away without a cloak on only to have someone see me from 50m away and drop me to the floor. I run almost basic HP so any hit will be lethal.
I've tried different modules on my gallente scout (adv) but I have to say, if you want to be that unseen guy that sneaks behind people or quietly hacks an objective, you should just not bother with shield or armour modules. Maybe fit basic ones if you can't fit anything else but don't prioritise it. The whole point of the scout is that you are aware of others when they are not aware of you, or at least you should see them before they see you. Currently I run two dampeners (adv) because I felt like with just the one I got spotted too many times. It's possible I just ran into a lot of Caldari scouts but I can't remember if that was actually so. I run a CPU upgrade on the third low slot because I want to fit certain things. My high slots are a Precision Enhancer (adv) which is great for finding those scouts who don't bother with many damps and... I believe a Light Damage Mod but it could be a Basic Shield Extender. My weapons are the Adv Shotgun and a basic SMG, with basic Flux Grenades (in theory for heavies but mainly for equipment destruction - I try to just shoot heavies before they end up killing me, everytime I try the flux they end up killing me anyway haha). My equipments are the adv Cloaking Device and basic Uplinks.
I'm not a very good player gungame wise, if you let me go head to head with others with just Rail Rifles and whatnot I will probably be the one that dies more often than not. In fact I never used to play FPS games before this one. However with the sneaking around tactic I manage to get anywhere from 1000 to 2000 WP per match. I'm usually around 6-12 kills with a few deaths. Like I said, lack of HP can make you die even when you seem to be doing well, all it takes is a few quick shots. I try and hack as many CRUs and Supplies as possible, not only for points but mainly for cutting off spawnpoints from the opponent. In the big needle domination map I generally circle the 6 CRUs or at the least the ones closer to the enemy base to minimise their spawnpoints from those spots. Makes it easier to win if the enemy has to travel back a lot longer, I think.
The only thing I like this suit to have is more speed but I'd have to go proto, or spend an aweful lot of SP just to get to the kinetic catalyzers. I'm at 3mil SP now with this character and frankly, it's all you need for scouting. I'm highly enjoying it and don't get annoyed when I die (unless it's over and over.. but hey) because I realise what the suit's weakness is.
You can try running a Combat Rifle which just feels natural or even the Assault Rifle as it fits the Gallente. I would advise against running purely armour and shields to be some kind of superhero scout, because well, that is what the assault suits are made for.
Oh, and if you have aspirations to kill tanks, don't bother with the Plasma Cannon. It's really hard to kill a tank with the basic PLC, I tried many times, haha. Adv swarms now ;) |

Hey Kyr
Thanks for your detailed response - very informative and makes a lot of sense. My ignorance is astounding for someone who's been playing for months but when you say precision enhancers - is that not only of use if you equip a scanner as well? If you've got cloak and uplinks that's not possible right, or have i got the enhancers all wrong?

The Precision Enhancers fit in the High Slots whereas you are thinking of the Active Scanner I believe - which is an equipment. Precision Enhancers is one of the three things you can upgrade through the Dropsuit Electronics path. - Precision Enhancement, which lets you 'see better' so to speak. The more you upgrade that, the better your passive scanning becomes. This is needed to find people who are using Dampeners. - Profile Dampening, which shields your profile from those who would use Precision Enhancers. The Dampener items fit in the low slots and are generally considered to be what the Gallente scout should be wearing as you also get an additional bonus to this (based on Caldari Scouts trying to find them, we'll have to see how Hotfix Charlie ends up placing the pawns). - Range Amplification, which boosts the range of your passive scans. I'd honestly love to max this out so you can see from further away but I have prioritised being invisible over seeing far away. I used to run 2 range amps at the start but I died to many times :)
The Active Scanner I have never used, I feel it is a Logi thing but I'm not sure. I do know that dual Dampeners often leaves me unscanned vs Vehicles passing by, possibly with Active Scanners on. I am a numbers guy but have decided that for this game I wasn't going to bother too much.. I'm not sure exactly what can see me and what cannot, there are some nice tables out there if you are interested in the actual numbers. |

Yeah rugby is more of an actual sport while american football is more of a set piece game.
There's also far too much talking in american football for it to be taken seriously as a sport.
The same with cricket and baseball. There is so much technique in cricket compared to baseball.
There was a test done where professional cricketer's swapped with professional baseball players. The results were that the cricketers aced the baseball and performed better while the baseball players came out as average at best.
The sane was done with rugby and american football but I don't know the outcome. I'd imagine that sticking armour on a rugby player in a game where almost anything goes is some fairly op sht lol.

That really clears up a lot of the questions I had about Scouting. Willing the hours away until I can try some of this stuff out!

I'm proto CalScout and I've never fit a cloak - that said I'm not a shotgunner (just a FotM scrub). I know a cloaked shotgunner who does well with it, but I know another who insists cloaks are a support for poor play.
So YMMV. Give it a go, but don't be too reliant on it.
Also, Australia :)
