- Does DUST have the fundamental core mechanics(aiming, movement, hit detection, controls, animations, fidelity, predictability, prioritization of personal skill) to be a solid shooter? No. In fact the flaws in DUST's core mechanics are pretty much a textbook example of a second-rate development process.
Core FPS: 3/10. - Does DUST have the core systems of a solid MMO(Corp tools, text and voice comms, socially informative HUD, ability to play with friends, matchmaking, stability, lag, solo play, interactive resource/economy)? To some extent, for some of these systems, yes. But for some not at all. Furthermore, the implementation on the systems we do have is currently in a half-finished state in terms of quality and features.
MMO: 4/10. - Does DUST have the feature suite that would make it an involving RPG(character progression, meaningful connection to the lore of New Eden, interesting/meaningful racial choices and roles, balance, NPE, fitting, customization)? Here DUST is at it's best. In the current hotfix environment we are iterating towards this. Again, systems are incomplete but progress is being made with what we do have at hand.
RPG: 6/10. - Most importantly in my eyes: the connection and relevance of DUST and it's mercs to/in New Eden. A lot could and has been said about this, so straight to the score:
New Eden: 2/10. - Fulfilling the original vision sold to us by CCP: So much is missing, so much works only passably. Still, significant technical back-end groundwork and infrastructure was put in place, even if we cannot reap the full fruits of that work in DUST.
Global Execution of the DUST Project: 3/10. - CCP's communication, interaction, treatment of/with the playerbase/betatesters has been poor and generally low grade/unprofessional. There have been exceptions, ofc, but there are far too many instances on these forums of CCP's bad attitude. CCP often chooses the worst possible way to deal with situations, often squandering the positives in their actions & decisions by acting in a way that highlights the negatives. It wouldn't matter, except it has had a real effect on the outcome of the DUST project.
Classiness/Professionalism/Honesty: 4/10. -
How much of the above was limited by the platform? Imo, none at all. The primary handicap faced by the DUST project was the quality of the decisions made by the executive management in control of the project, and the support they did or did not provide to the DUST dev team.
