Hey guys - I know we are a long ways from any type of legit use of NPE, but now is the time to start thinking about what we want it to look like. The reason being - Dust (and Eve) suffer from poor retention of new players due to complex mechanics that are not explained. By having this in mind as the game is develops, a better product is delivered.
To that end, I would suggest something like GW2 uses: a video game manual.

Take a look at this and tell me this isn't cool.

Ah yes, the humble manual.
There's a long history behind it. It used to be the case that the manual also contained most (if not all) of the story of a game, rather than the few pages that we have today, they were big books!
Manuals and tutorials should indeed coexist, as their advantages lie in different areas; the tutorial being for the learning of the ropes, and the manual as a reference for someone who just needs some refreshment.

I remember those! I loved to read those and always read them on the way home from the store as a kid!

Indeed, but unfortuanately, these are rather rare things to come by now, the times have moved on...
And now, we must look forward, in the face of progress, of new revolutionary technology, and better; more powerful, and secure means of storing our data.

This is a fair point, combine the two into the NPE. What if your could teach the player while telling them the story/lore? Not just have the "use mouse to look around" dribble.
You start of in battle, [Lore Happens] and it leads to the point where you become a cloned solider. All while teaching you how to play the game.
