The current boring game mode situation to me is the absolute WORST aspect of this game, and it genuinely makes me angry because we had this really interesting and engaging mode (Skirmish 1.0) and it just got scrapped. I'm tired of doing the same things over and over. In the original Skirmish, one team (attackers) started out with an MCC that slowly approaches the outpost for docking, the other team (defenders) started out with control of all objectives. The attackers had to destroy both defense relays (a type of objective controlling all installations), then that unlocked the next stage; a new portion of the map was "unlocked", and the attackers objective then became to disable the null cannons that threatened to destroy the MCC before the docking.
I know its too late to expect anything as interesting or complex as the original Skirmish at this point, even when Dust had a full team of devs none of them ever made it a priority to bring back that type of gameplay, or to bring any genuinely new modes (Domination is just a tweaked Skirmish). How about this: A new version of Skirmish where the maps and objectives are just the same, but one team (defenders) starts out with the null cannons under their control. The other team (attackers) start with no objectives, but once they take control of an objective, the defenders cannot take it back. Attackers win if they take control of all objectives. Defenders win if the null cannons destroy the attacker MCC before the attackers take all the objectives. I suppose the attackers can also win if they quickly take the majority but not all of the objectives/null cannons, and the defenders lose because of the resulting damage to their MCC. Of course any side can also win by depleting enemy clones. Game mode could be called "Assault" or something.
I don't know if this is possible at this near-death stage in Dust's development, but I think it should be relatively easy to implement.
To prevent the addition of a new mode from dividing the playerbase too much, add domination to the Skirmish queue, like how Ambush OMS is part of Ambush queue. Domination is basically Skirmish anyway with just a few less null cannons.

One point Id like to add is that I'd like to see this with a longer "Contested" state for a hacked objective, so attackers but defend it for longer in order to gain full control. Another interesting bit about this mechanic is that teams will typically remain spread out across all objectives, but as the attackers take more and more objectives, people start stacking on the same objective. Essentially the intensity of combat increases the longer fighting goes on, which is really quite cool. I totally agree about the defenders being able to counter-hack contest objectives, only after the attacker fully controls the objective would it become unhackable by defenders.

The defenders would need a way to get an objective back rather than no way at all. Otherwise this would be an unplayable game mode. Just my opinion. As the game progresses there will be less and less objectives for the attackers to take, until there is only one, as anyone who plays Domination will know, sometimes a team can hold a point for the entirety of a game. Defenders could still lose on MCC damage, but that really depends on how fast the attackers were on taking the earlier objectives.

Does CCP have the resources to make a game mode that randomizes absolutely everything? Like, somehow it creates a "skirmish" with no NULL cannons, no time or clone limits, and 80 MCCs on each team that MUST be destroyed with handheld weapons. I don't think that would make any sense, but certainly would be interesting

The way I see it is that this could play similarly to a Domination game where one team is already redlined. All efforts to capture any points would be useless as the attacking team would constantly be pushed back by the defenders. Well what if the attackers are all proto squads? Proto will give an advantage to whoever uses it regardless of side or game mode.

MATCHMAKING to OP: I also would love a new game mode no matter what it is, even if it was something placed under special contracts and only around for a short amount of time. I don't see why bad matchmaking would make this game any worse than it does to our existing modes. I think any new game mode should strive to do something existing game modes don't already do, like attack/defend, so I wouldn't be ok with just adding any mode just for the sake of adding more modes; it has to offer something different. I don't think it would make sense to spend time making a new mode to only have it available for a limited time, so if they make a new mode, I'm certain it would stay there indefinitely.

The mode being so dependent on even teams would quickly run off all but the newest newberries that do not know any better and the protostompers that love to use them for padding. As far as the limited time thing, it would be unlikely they do it this way for exactly the reason you point out but it would not seem the resources are there to continually adjust a new game mode to make it fair for all involved after release. The current game modes have had quite a bit of work put into adjusting the maps and point placement in some cases since their release to keep them viable and I do not see this being possible now. Even ambush is still in need of adjustment after all the time it has been around and only recently gotten some tweaks that did not help it a whole lot. But don't see why this game mode would be dependent on even teams any more or less than our existing modes. Certainly would be less bad than Domination.

To me it seems like having the defenders start with the null cannons is a huge advantage where they can just race to say 2 out of 5 objectives with 8 people each and guarantee a win. Any mode where one team is given the better starting position in combination with the current matchmaking and people that realize these things and leave if they are on the wrong end just seems a bit disastrous to me. It is very possible that I am being a bit too pessimistic on that but I really do not think so. While the defenders have the starting advantage, the fact that defenders cannot take back any objectives once fully taken by the attackers balances this out. If defenders are only defending 2 objectives out of 5, and the attackers get the other 3 fast enough before their MCC takes too much damage, than the attackers might win on MCC damage. Also, if the defenders are protecting 2 objectives at a time, then attackers can just focus their entire team on just one objective at a time and outnumber the defenders.

Only this would be new. My guess is making a moving MCC is too much for PS3. That's the reason the game failed isn't it? This wouldn't require moving MCCs
