I am trying to go out and hack objectives, defend, ect. I'm not the greatest player but sometimes when i get into matches no matter how safe i try to play the enemy team is just too ruthless and eventually i just begin to hover outside my redline. I'm not exactly new but i've been sniping so long i don't know how to really play they field and i'm trying to learn. I just need some advice on how to move about on the maps even when my team is losing badly. It honestly makes me wanna go back to sniping because then even if my team is losing i can still do well. Also is there anything i can do against these scouts by myself or should i just leave that area alone when one is guarding it? I run a caldari commando frame with advanced assault railgun and militia assault gun for secondary. with 2 shield extenders and a nanohive. |

The first thing to do is stop running by yourself. Even if you are not in a squad, find a group of 2 or 3 guys and stick to them like glue. Wherever they go, you go. By running with others, you are less likely to get snuck up on and shotgunned in the back (it will still happen but not as frequently). You will also, if you run into two or three enemies instead of 1, be MUCH more likely to survive the encounter and possibly even get a kill or two yourself. Also, with commando, run with either uplinks or nanohives. If you are running with heavies, throw on a repair tool and keep them alive. The better you help them out and keep them alive, the more likely it is that you will survive.

I recommend you join this chat channel: Learning Coalition
If I see you we can squad up.
Whenever an Objective is clear it is best to go in with a team mate, always assume there is a cloaked scout. What you could do is switch out the assault rifle for a sniper. This would make you a marksman and very helpful to provide an over watch till you're ready for the assault. With your fit you should either be guarding an objective(the outside ones) from a distance or be rolling with a squad and providing information on enemy location or taking out specific targets. Basically stay at range. Also everytime you die write down how you died and how you can prevent that from happening again. Learn from every clones lost.

If you are on your own, that is your problem.
Scouts are about the only suits that can lone wolf it (and even then it can be rough). If you are trying to solo objectives with a commando, you are not playing to the suits' strengths.
Squad up and follow a squad around. New players work best when with a group. It will help you cover your weaknesses as you can use militia gear, and still do damage even if you can't take down any of the reds solo. You can also get assist points and kills when your squad has taken down the health of a red for you.
I suggest hooking up with the Learning Coalition chat channel as I am sure the people there would be more than happy to help, and give you tips.

Also, try some other weapons possibly. Instead of going double assault, check out swarm launchers/plasma cannons/mass drivers, something that can damage vehicles. If you have those, other people will help you out and try and keep you alive so you can take out tanks/ dropships/LAVs. By running two separate types of weapons, you are giving yourself versatility to do more than one task at a time.

Aha and interesting conundrum for the would be Caldari Commando.
Firstly I would suggest, since I don't know if you have, develop your core skills such as Shield Extension, Recharge, and Regeneration as they will directly affect how long you survive in a fire fight.
As you are a Commando it serves you to be constantly aware of your role. You are not an assault, you do not move fast enough or you do not regen fast enough to be one. As a Shield Tanker you naturally have less total HP than Armour tankers.
What you do have is a damage bonus and a superior HP to most suits.
Your role in selecting Commando is to provide suppressive and covering fire. In your case at long range with your sniper rifle, and Rail Rifle.
If I were you I would play your Caldari Commando like I do my Amarr Commando. I would stick to defensive actions, hunkering down on objectives and protecting them from enemy attackers. While this might sound like a passive style of play it can be very rewarding when you develop your skills enough to hold objectives against 2-3 attackers.
Basically find yourself a position where you can position yourself for maximum long range efficiency. Snipe enemy threats from across the map and switch out to your Assault Rail Rifle or Rail Rifle for better close encounter support.
I promise you that once you find your niche in the Commando suit you will cut your deaths per match to one or two tops.....sometimes you won't ever die.
Here are some reccomendations I have seen other players using.
Caldari Commando- Adaptable Rifleman Rail Rifle Assault Rail Rifle Nanohive (Low reps high Ammo replenishment variety) 1x Damage Module 1x Shield Extender 1x Armour Repair
Caldari Commando- Ranged Support/ Point Defence Assault Rail Rifle Sniper Rifle (Tactical or Standard) Nanohive/ Active Scanner 2x Damage Module 1x Shield Regulator
Caldari Commando - Mobile Heavy Assault and AV Assault Rail Rifle/ Rail Rifle Swarm Launcher Nanohive 2x Shield Extenders 1x Armour Repairer or Regulator
The Adaptable Rifleman gives you the advantages of the standard Rail Rifles 95m Optimal Range and couples that with the 10% damage buff your suit gets at Lvl 5 Caldari Commando. It means at very long ranges you can harass and suppress the enemy and that at that range your only worry should be Laser Rifles. The Assault Rail Rifle offers you a more agressive option if your enemies can close the gap and keeps that Rail Tech damage bonus and moderate range.
The Ranged Support/ Point Defence is perfect for setting up in a vantage over and objective and in its defence offering you unmatched range with the sniper rifle, which receives a damage bonus adding to its stopping power. The ARR is for anyone who gets inside of the Sniper Rifles range and is difficult too target.
The Mobile Heavy Assault is all about being a part of that attacking wave. If you are impatient and the enemy is not coming to you then going to them is the only option. If you have to you might as well go packing some serious fire power. Stick to the rear of your attacking group, put lots of bullets down range. If your fire team is set upon by a tank or vehicle you also have the fire power to take that sucker down.
Module Selection- Personally you have 2 routes for your High Slots and IMO 2 options for your low slots.
High Slots-
Shield Extenders- If you want more HP to be more durable Damage Modules - If you want to be less durable but have more firepower
Low Slots-
Armour Repairer- Since you have low armour and few slots you will need some way to recover it. You can use Nanohives, but Armour Repairers are more reliable.
Shield Regulators- Reduce the shield depletion delay before recharge.....but cost your Total Shield HP.
Just remember to stay back, take your time and think about who you try to engage. You have plenty of shields, lots of fire power, but low regeneration and a very large hit box. Support your team by destroying enemies before they can even get in range, then sweep in with them and over whelm the enemy.

One last word of encouragement... Don't give up. It will get better, I promise. I ran Sniper for almost a year and when I started to transition to up close fighting because Snipers have been nerfed to oblivion, I got my butt handed to me. My KDR went from a 4.0 + to under 1 really quickly. I had to learn the hard way and basically learn how to play the game again because it is so much different up close. I had several matches for the first month or so where I went 0-9, 1-11, 1-16, 3-10, etc. After that month, it started showing up as 4-7, 5-6, 8-11, 3-4, etc. Still dying a lot but I was almost getting at many kills as deaths. By the second month I was running about even, lots of 8-8, 10-10, 4-4, 5-4, 6-7 type matches where I'm right around a 1.0 KDR. I'm still not great by a long shot but I've had matches recently where I've gone 9-1, 11-4, 14-8, etc. Do I still get the occasional 4-9? All the time. But it is a lot less frequent and the matches where my kills outnumber my deaths are even more common.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is don't give up. Take the advice of some of these guys who have been around doing it for a while. There are always people willing to help you if you'll take the time to listen. They've turned me from a complete and total scrub to an only once in a while scrub, and occasionally I will even lead the leaderboard if my uplinks/nanohives are placed right and don't get blown up.

Nanohives are great for supporting yourself, but there are other options, particularly when you're getting pushed off the battlefield.
I'd recommend checking out drop uplinks in particular. If you can make a break and place an uplink behind the enemy front line, then you'll greatly assist your team in re-positioning and making a run at distance objectives or outflanking the enemy. Once you've got a couple of levels in uplinks you can have multiple running concurrently and can really reduce the size of the battlespece for your team.
I've seen teams of random blues win against que-synced proto squads purely based on their ability to spawn where the enemy isn't and keep up contant pressure on the reds. Probably the most powerful piece of equipment in game, when used well.

Check this out and see if there is anything about the playstyle you can adopt.
@ Brokerib
I don't recommend using Uplinks on a Commando suit. You are too slow and easily scanable to get those down where it counts. But if you are regularly willing to take on wider flanks then perhaps those will benefit your team.
The issue is that OP is a Shield Commando and most equipment options do not benefit shield tanked suits

Agreed, uplinks were a suggestion for breaking redline, but you're better off doing it in a basic light suit than a commando.

A lot of what everyone else has said has pretty much covered the basics. Im gonna add my two cents in as well.
When first getting into a random match, start of in militia gear. Get a feel for your opponents. That way you can tell after either 5 kills or deaths, whether its safe to use some of your better gear, or better of staying in free militia. Id say around 3/2 would be safe to switch to some of your better stuff. if its anything less, stick with militia for a bit.
You dont want to cost your self more ISK than you will make in a match, do NOT be afraid to play safe. do NOT be afraid to use cheap gear to save yourself some ISK, especially if you already know its a losing match.
like others have said as well, team up. Dust is a team game, you can not really play the lone wolf here. This isnt CoD. Dust doesnt hold your hand, if it touches your hand period, its to throw you to the wolves. Play smart, play safe. Squad up when possible. If its not possible, run around with 2 or 3 random players in that match. Far safer that way.
Might i suggest, if your having trouble with surviving, investing in armor repair mods? Standard militia ones would work just fine, let you know if they can fit into your fitting. |

There was a player, can't remember his name, who was EXACTLY like you. Then we got together and said "Run Logi". Now he is a serious asset when he plays.
Some players are just not slayers. I am not a slayer. I'm a harasser OR supporter. Harassers are people that have gotten good enough to hold their own against slayers but typically lose in the end BUT they have the added ability to properly support a group or just be the biggest A$$ holes in the game. Basically, we make proto stompers lives miserable.
Thokk nailed it. Stick to other groups but bring a rep tool or ammo with you or an injector. If you run with a suit that has more than one equipment, it is very common to run injector and ammo or injector and rep tool. Although scanners aren't completely viable anymore, it isn't "stupid" to run with one as this can tell you, roughly, where the enemy is and where to avoid. You can also join squads mid battle.
Before you spawn in, press the select button, select the "team" chat, wait for it to load as it can take a second, then select a squad of the most people that have a slot available. Join that squad if you can. If you can't, join another one. They will share valuable information. If you don't have a mic it's not a big deal in most cases. Remember, if you don't have a mic you can still turn on the ability to hear them through your TV speakers through your Playstation settings.
