Basically i have been using Gallente basic heavy frames and put all my sp into my assault gun for about 2 weeks. I unlocked proto but i can't buy more than a few guns. How do other players make enough isk to run proto even half the time? I make isk after matches but then i have to restock my current fit which is all militia, one basic heavy frame and an advanced assault rifle. Should i be doing something different? |

Don't use proto weaponry, tbh.
Normally people run proto weapons with higher tier suits to support their equipment.
In terms of efficiency, using proto weaponry is a very poor investment. You get about a 10% increase in damage for a significant investment of ISK. You probably don't need that 10%. That ISK would be much better spent on better suits and modules, where the increases are much higher. A protosuit has many more slots than a standard suit, which is very powerful, and proto modules range from ~40% stronger to several times as strong as a standard module.
Alternatively, don't die as much. I generally run ISK positive with ADV suits and proto weaponry by dying only a few times a match, if at all.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

Probably.
Nothing wrong with using the militia suits, but it kind of defeats the purpose to use a proto weapon on them with little SP dumped into other things.
As a general rule, it is best to put your SP into core skills, such as armor, shield, engineering, etc as they will have an effect on all suits. You may have a heavy, but if you don't have SP into armor or shields, then you are running a lower eHP than other heavies and are more vulnerable.
Not to mention, if you are not using an HMG, you are missing out on taking advantage of the deadliest weapon in the game, and something only designed for heavies.
I would suggest targeting your SP towards armor and shields first, and then looking at the rest of the core skills to see what best fits your play style, and leveling up those.
I would also suggest ditching the proto weapon if you can't afford to run it. Many of those constantly running proto gear are either players that are so good that they can do so, or players that have taken advantage of the previous PC weaknesses and obtained billions of isk to burn through.

Also remember that the training from earning proto weapons is still being used when you are weilding a lesser weapon from the same family.

The real benefit is getting proficiency. Every two levels in proficieny is another tier of weaponry ie if you want to run a proto weapon all the time but are cheap/learning/want to go isk positive. Get level two proficiency and an ADV damage mod. That is 10% more damage on a MLT weapon effectively making it a proto hitting weapon.
Two things to note 1) of course a proto weapon with this is another ten% 2) headshots are the great leveler... It is effectively double or greater damage so aim for the head if you get the drop on someone. |

The key is ambush grinding and using MLT suits.
Here is the fit that I used most often. Lately I've been using my logi though:
MLT Gallente Medium
No High Slots 3x basic armor plates
Light Weapon of choice Side arm of choice (I use flaylock to help destroy equipment)
I use flux nades because I use armor related weapons
Uplinks or rep tool
The suit costs less than 5k. If you get enough WP from uplinks or rep tool you'll be a top performer at around 200k isk. On a series of bad games you will profit about 150k isk a match. If you have a series of good games you are looking at about the full 200k isk.
I hope that helps. This is how I make my isk. Every 1 mil Isk I get goes into "savings" (i.e. alt account) and then I play the rest until I'm down to some low number (not too low). Then I rinse and repeat. Corp wise, it's only two of us and we have over 200 mil isk. My corp mate had over 450 mil at one point from grinding ambush.

So far the only thing I've learned is running militia items is NOT the way to build up your isk... apparently. *shrugs*
but whatever. run militia items when you can and if your fitting allows you. |

Running the MLT fit I gave you is an even better one then the crap one I had to run before 1.8.
The MLT fit I gave you is like 5k isk. If you die 20 times you will still profit in ambush (20 * 5 = ~100k ISK. Just forget about the KDR and Kill count. Drop uplinks in strong places (i.e. difficult for the enemy to get to but easy to defend) and keep with the largest group and use.
Remember that you need to score WP. Your ISK payout is based on WP accrued in a match.
If the match, somehow, has a total pool of 500k isk to reward and only 3 people played as follows:
player 1 2000 WP player 2 1000 WP player 3 500 WP
The 1st player will get a little more than 50% of all of the total ISK while the remainder would be split with the other two players. Uplinks and rep tools give far more WP then anything else.

Most of what your going to read on this site is BS. For an example " it is best to put your SP into core skills" and none of that is true. It's just something they where told when they first started playing the game so they repeat the same words over and over again.
The truth is you have to find out what type of Dust player you are. Are you afraid of being shot? If so invest into your core skills. If you want to be the one killing invest into your weapons. Or... You could also invest into more of a support roll like logi.
When I first started playing Dust I did just what you did and got my assault gun up to level 5 in everything. I started getting 20/0 KDR. My gun was just eating right thru all these players that did nothing but invest into there core skills.
But I did have the same problem as you. I found a few answers.
- Get into a good corporation that does PC. One good PC win is about 1 million ISK.
- use your free DS to save up ISK in non important games.

Run an advanced gun. Don't invest into cores, if you have lvl 5 cores but no suit or gun then what exactly is the point? Upgrade as you need. I have 24 million SP, and my Electronics and Engineering is still not at Level 5. Also, run with a squad in bush. If you have a mic, hop in someone's squad for a match if there is one running. Stay with the group, prove your effectiveness the best you can. Hopefully they'll like you, and yall can make ISK for days. Also run matches either very late at night, or mid-day when everyone is at work and Nyain San isn't stomping bush

I appreciate the kind comment :) But honestly I'm not. I just dont give a toss bout KDR. If you aren't a slayer (And I'm not), play defensively. Slayers, offensive. Carry a nanite. If not for you reviving, then to let you know when you're being flanked by scouts. People who drop behind you, and where it says Shotgun on the board usually mean you're being flanked. Little tricks like that are what allow you to save isk. 07 all ggs

Until you've got all your core skills up there's really no point in running proto anything ever. It's nothing but an isk sink at this stage. There's really nothing wrong w running basic Lt weapons and sidearms.

I fail to see what is the use of getting Electronics and Engineering to 5 if you don't have any demanding modules. Skill and Build. Get your suit, see it's limitations, run an adv weapon on it if you must. THEN get your cores up if you need it. You need to focus on how to kill the guy in front of you, not salivate about when you'll get your modules to kill them.
Get your guns and proficiency bro.

I have to disagree with the blanket statement that most of what you read on here is BS, there is a plethora of great information here. SOME of it is worthless but this is the internet, what do you expect. Investing in core skills is solid advice and it will serve you well. Over investing in core skills is not. You should invest up to around 3 in your cores because it will cost very little but provide quit a bit of a return. Before pouring much SP into anything specific though, I would have to recommend you find yourself, so to speak. You should sample as many guns, roles and suits as you can and figure out what is the most fun to play. You can do this on your own, but more effectively do so with a good corporation.
When I first started, a long, long time ago, I had no clue what to do. I joined a corporation and was told to invest into my core skills, I did. I started playing as a Logi and eventually moved into other roles but the skills that always stayed with me were my cores (until the respec). I never regretted spending those skill points because they would have been spent eventually anyhow. Running proto guns on a militia suit or even a basic suit is a waste of isk and time especially if you have no cores. Quite simply, as King0fHearts and others have mentioned, Join a corp, save up some ISK and figure out where you want to go with your character. |

Never use a proto gun. The getting the proto weapons is a euphemism I use for GET PROFICIENCY. Wait to use the proto gun for when you have a proto suit, proto modules. You can always use adv weapons, and it makes your militia guns better. Get 25% bonus CPU and PG is good, but for what exactly? You fit those modules, but that's overkill. Get them to three if you think you must, only increase if you need more for your fits
