NOTICE: This feedback is only for pub match only. FW and PC are excluded
Hello all,
I have been thinking very hard on orbitals. Usually when someone is stomping I instantly think "orbitals should be removed from the game" but I now understand that this would be possibly detrimental to the game. As it stands we must first understand how orbitals work to then explain why it's a broken mechanic and why it should be fixed as well as include some lore behind the fix that CCP might be able to incorporate into the game without much trouble.
HOW ORBITALS WORK
The basic way to get an orbital is for the squad to get 2,500 warpoints. The squad leader then call in the orbital to decimate his foes without actually having to move a finger.
THE PROBLEM
Orbitals tend to be abused. They usually get obtained by squaded people and people tend to actually play for the orbital so sometimes, instead of PTFO meaning play the f*cking point it means Play the f*cking orbital. In a sense there are many sqauds that drop massive amounts of gear, have rep chains and even have allies take damage just so they can get WP to get an orbital.
Orbitals tend to favor stompers, since even if a stomped team gets an orbital it usually wont help to solve being stomped. AT best it's a nuisance for the stompers.
Another problem are the Blueberries themselves. Not being able to pick you team means that you and your squad is stuck with mostly tactically useless players that only serve to increase the enemies stomp potential. Hence playing pubs usually means playing russian roullete in terms of having good or bad matches.
USES
Orbitals have many tactical uses and the need for them to be in game is justified. They help a losing team gain a foothold as well as help the winning team a break from a really good push from the enemy.
The bad thing about orbitals is that it is indiscriminate on who actually needs it. The parameters are too blind so the winners win harder and the losers, if being stomped dont have a chance anyways and that's why they are being stomped.
THE FIX
Apart from having the the warpoint requirements (the blind aspect of the orbital), the ability to call in an orbital should factor in MCC damage and Clone count. If there is a major difference, please read a lopsided match, then the ability to call in an orbital is denied.
For example: Your team has 100 clones and the enemy team has 70 clones. They have 30% less clones than you. Your teams ability to use that orbital is withheld until the match is more even.
Example two: If your team is winning the MMC battle by 30%, the chance to throw the orbital down is also withheld in order to keep the fight fair and even.
THE REASONING
Orbitals are used and abused but there is still a tactical need for them in the match. a winning team, does not need an orbital if they are winning by a certain margin, since they are in fact winning. This will reduce the stomp level and eliminate those redline orbitals that completely obliterate the enemy team while they are supposed to be safe. It serves as an equalizer to an already unequal matchamaking system that creates lopsided matches.
LORE
Orbitals are expensive to pay for by merc (not eve pilot) standards and should therefore be only used when the need for them exists. This means that a team that is already winning by a certain margin does not have an extreme need for it.

Orbitals are a cool mechanic - more so if they ever finished the EVE Link - but you're right in how arbitrary they are. I think you're basic notion of, "You're winning by a good margin, so you don't get it right now" is solid. |

I like the idea. How about a different twist on it:
Each team has exactly 4 orbitals for each match. An orbital is granted to the squad that has earned the most WPs for the team since the last orbital has been made available. An orbital becomes available when: 1. MCC shields drop below 50% 2. MCC shields are dropped 3. MCC armor drops below 67% 4. MCC armor drops below 33%
If one team gets roflstomped it receives all 4 orbital strikes while the stomping team gets none. In an even match both teams receive the same amount of orbitals. The squads that tries the hardest receives the most orbitals. (Let's hope that by that time kills from orbitals don't count towards the next orbital.) |

This actually sounds very good but I think that WP should be a factor. So there would only be a maximum of 4 obtainable orbitals, they can only be achieved through war point gain and they can only be set if the fight is fair based on the OP.
I think this would not only make the game a lot fairer but it would also lead to a lot of interesting fights.

EvE isk value is different than dust isk value hence why there is no isk trading. I used to do 100million an hour just doing anomalies in null

In dust ISK that's even less, around 1k ISK. |

Maybe if the 30% ratio is exceeded. You have 100 clones left and the other team has say 50 clones left, orbitals cause damage to both teams in the blast zone?
Can you imagine the outrage of some players getting "oribtalled" by their own team? This would change the way people and squads and teams play.
-
And by the by, orbitals in Ambushes, are almost always used as a stomping weapon. One team has 45 clones left and the other has 10 and they are trying to get to the next match and orbital a couple of times. |

Orbitals have at least one balancing attribute:
They clear out impregnable rooftop camps. You know, those ones full of forges making it unclearable and giving a break for 'continous rain of death from above'.

That's why they shouldn't be removed but fixed
