Hi, been flying since chrom. Its the same rendering wise.
Personally I would count it as much worse than flying third person as it severely limits your FOV (as you know) so unless the threat is directly in front of you and level you won't see them even if they do render. Its also much harder to control your craft in first person and much easier to crash.
Are you thinking if the rendering was better for first person pilots could survey areas for threats by scanning in first person? |

Are you thinking if the rendering was better for first person pilots could survey areas for threats by scanning in first person? Yes, exactly. I was thinking it might be easier for CCP to focus on rendering issues as it pertains to the first person view since it is closer to the action. It might not be a huge boon, but since rendering is such an issue to ADS pilots I thought I'd toss the idea out there and see if anyone punts it. Well it is an interesting idea and I'm sure that many solo ads pilots would enjoy discussing it further.
For me it wouldn't help typical operations, unless I was preforming a strafing run in which case it would help lining up the run. I usually only do this against turrets and redline tanks.
I fly with gunners and for some reason the gunners rendering is far superior to that of the pilots (possibly because for the pilot its rendering the whole dropship?) So they are the ones hitting the ground targets as they are focused on their job which frees up the pilot (me) to focus on flying the ship and keeping situational awareness. I fly in third person because it allows me to see where my gunners are pointed and give them proper angles on targets. I usually only switch to first person when preforming a strafe run, notifying my gunners for maximum effect and knowing where they are aiming when in first person, and engaging dropships, because my pilot gun is more effective than my gunnersin most cases.
So while improving first person rendering would help for strafe runs it wouldn't remedy the issue of pilots being blind. It would be of more use to me to be able to see the targets my gunners are engaging and the av threats engaging me that my gunners spot rather than making educated guesses on their location. This would cut down on the annoying chatter that's involved with my engagements, Gunner: there is a group left side low, can you get me an angle? Pilot: Rodger what's their location? Gunner: south of by the corner across the bridge from the cru heading towards the bridge that leads to A Pilot: copy, moving.....is that a good angle? Gunner: almost give me a bit more elevation Pilot: that better? Gunner: got one but the rest have moved into the acid field by A, gotta reposition Pilot: oh okay now I see them hold on I have to swing her around
If I could actually see what my gunners see it would go more like, Gunner: there is a group left side low, can you get me an angle? Pilot: Rodger, eyes on stand by for the shot
+1 for the idea tho, and for understanding one of the flaws many ads pilots have struggled with over the builds

Baal Omniscient wrote: Then what about shared DS vision? If you recall, back in Chromosome you could see any enemy your squadmates had LoS on. If dropships had some form of shared vision within the ship, the pilots would at least be able to see the chevrons of people their gunners can see. This would both vastly improve the pilot's ability to keep track of potential threats and give ADS pilots a real incentive to fit side guns to their crafts and have dedicated gunners.
Excellent idea! I'm all about promoting teamwork with vehicles, especially when the dropship is concerned. This would certainly remedy the situation of pilots being generally blind to everything by giving them a way to improve their vision through teamwork. Kind of like a sentinel using a cal scout for passive scans, though less 'all seeing' more 'line of sight.'
I think this would be the best solution to the rendering issue for pilots. I may have to go make a thread about this and see if I could get rattati or logibro to comment on if this would be possible in a hotfix. +1 |
