dust had a growing playerbase before they killed the title. they were actively recruiting more and more players since November.
ccp secured defeat from the clutches of victory. they killed a game just as it began to succeed. that is all.

A lot of things, actually.
Quote:
- Player Wealth
This is mostly due to the refund that was given at the start of Uprising, and the excessive amount of passive ISK in Planetary Conquest. These 2 items gave players insane amounts of ISK (500M-1B), which effectively guaranteed that a vast amount of players would be able to spam PRO gear for the rest of this game's existence with no repercussions, which lead to Public Contracts being to far too difficult for new players in Starter Fits going up against PRO suits touting 600-1.5k eHP and weapons with 4-700 DPS.
- Item Balance
An issue that everyone who plays DUST 514 is familiar with, besides Hotfix Alpha & Hotfix Bravo (which came too late), there has never been a time in DUST 514 where their wasn't at least 1 item that was overpowered. When you couple that with the fact that many players and corporations refuse to use anything but overpowered items, you had a game that forced you to either:
A. Join the FoTM Crowd B. Remain non-viable due to gear being exceedingly stronger than your own.
Flavor of The Month (referred to as FoTM) gear not only ruined the diversity this game is supposed to have, but made DUST 514 unapealing for those who want to use what they prefer, as opposed to constantly investing into FoTM gear. For example, would you play a match that had 16 players using Core Flaylock Pistols on a Logistics ck.0 frame in the Uprising 1.2 Patch? No? I don't think many would either.
- Matchmaking
This is a big one, and one of the main reasons why this game failed. There was no matchmaking system, which meant that sometimes nearly every time you'd have matches where a full squad of players using high-end gear being pitted up against players who are not in a squad, and lack the ability to handle the squad.
- Lack of Meaningful Development & Poor Leadership
Since the game was fully released, the only new content we've ever received are:
- Caldari & Amarr Scouts
- Caldari, Matari, & Gallente Heavies/Commandos
- Magsec SMG
- Bolt & Ion Pistol
- 2 New Maps
Dispite being promised far more than that. For the most part of DUST 514, the lack of racial variety lead this game to feel incomplete (which it still does due to the lack of Matari and Amarr vehicles and other racial items(. For the most part, it was difficult to near impossible to be a Faction specific loyalist due to the lack of gear for your race).
This is not however, to discredit the poor management and leadership, which is the root cause of almost nothing productive being done for DUST 514 at CCP Shanghai.

Don't forget that instead of CCP adding PvE to make it easier on people with low SP(or for the rest of us to take an occasional break from PvP), they just farted in our faces and burped out Legion... |

Imo, the reason DUST failed is...
A) Knowingly developing the game on hardware that was at the end of its lifespan
B) Similar reasons as why WoD failed...issues with vision, EVE being the only thing they care about, etc etc.

I don't have the eve-offline numbers to prove it, but just kinda what I'm observing daily during matches. Could be my imagination -- will be interesting to see the numbers in three months or so.

Wait till Destiny hits, that'll likely swamp a few numbers ey? Yeah, probably, we'll have to see who bails in a month after the beta opens. But if you look at the numbers for the last 3 months (http://eve-offline.net/?server=dust), you can see the dive around June 1st, and it seems pretty steady for the last month. Not a long timeframe to judge with, sure, but it seems like whoever was pissed off enough to leave has already done so.
So unless CCP royally jacks up -- I mean, worse than they already did -- it really can only go up from here. If we keep getting hotfixes, and maybe restricted/meta-level capped matches, things might get better.

Wait till Destiny hits, that'll likely swamp a few numbers ey? There was a post on that where the numbers dropped significantly a month to 2 after Fanfest and then went up a bit but was still under the pre~Fanfest numbers. It's also seems to have gained some attention with EVE players checking out Dust now. But the overall grade on Dust is pretty bad and really it's kind of a sinking ship with CCP just plugging holes in to avoid it dropping into the water and drowning. Even games that tend to draw the ridicule of players here, like MAG and Resistance, still had numbers nearly 30 pts above Dust on user and Metacritic rankings with the biggest problem being lack of content.
Overall game functionality is what keeps players. Likewise, in the beginning, game imbalances are not as critical since with everyone starting out there's no one way for anyone to build up their characters in a manner that created and imbalanced system. In some respects, CCP did the exact 180 of what a lot of other companies did and it simply shot them in the foot: more content, more bugs, less hotfixes and less responses to user feedback.
IF the game was pretty polished then it wouldn't be so bad but to start the process only after tons of players raging over CCP in general followed by one of the worse PR agendas possible, right now I feel like CCP is just trying to salvage Dust to go into Legion with a cleaner slate and say "see we made a good game"! Too bad it came at too high of a cost. |

The sole reason for DUST's failure was CCP's decision-making.
Imo, the people responsible for the truly bad calls re: DUST were prolly not even part of the development team. They were prolly CCP old guard in Iceland. I doubt we ever saw them on the DUST forums.
My biggest fear for Legion is that those people are still calling the shots, compounded by the fact that Rouge has no doubt been told that Legion MUST generate solid ROI. The pressure to go mainstream/popular must be tremendous.
One can only hope that DUST's abject failure has given those responsible occasion to pause and reflect, and to hopefully leave the development of Legion to the Dev team and the players.

Dust wasn't the best FPS in many peoples eyes outside from these forums . There are other high profile games to look at than Dust that was better at being a lobby shooter. Also Dust always had about 3000-4000 for a very long time so it wasn't really that popular after awhile. To me it seems CCP just didn't know what they need to do and as a result Dust suffered. |
