Question time! They may be short questions, but that doesn't mean you have to give short answers
- What is a game to you, and what makes you pick Game A over Game B?
- What do you typically expect from a game?
- What does the word "Immersion" mean to you and how can you relate it to Dust/Legion?
I am part shovel, part man, full scout, and a little bit special.

1) something I can have fun with. Really depends on the game.
2) solid core mechanics
3) how absorbed I can get in it. I look for immersion in rpg's and single player, not fps or multiplayer.

1. Something I play to have fun. In this case, the term "fun" encompass a complex experience. I prefer non-cartoonish human-based Sci-Fi.
2. I expect to be challenged.
3. Immersion is when your mind is in the game in an unbroken continuity; when you're mentally "in-game" as a matter of fact. I've played milsim paintball for some time and Dust is the only game that made me relive those thrills through playing with a team or a squad.

1. Depends on type, I play many styles. If I were to boil it down quite a bit I'd say I choose game A over B due to either a interesting story (for single player) or customizable player driven choices (for online RPGs, MMOs, FPS, or RTS). The first is like reading a good book, or watching a quality stage/cinema performance. The second is like playing a board game or a sport with friends, in that who you are playing with and/or against defines the experience deeply and the same basic framework can yield diverse and complex experiences.
2. From a good one? That it delver on it's promises. If a game offers a contiguous set of player defined story choices through out a trilogy then it needs to make sure those choices are meaningful and those triggers are working. If it offers a 'twitch' experience it needs to be smooth and optimized. If it offers puzzles they need to be complex but not obfuscated.
The list goes on but fundamentally it comes to this, if a game says "players will engage with me here" then whatever method/methods it offers need to be meaningful within the game world. If the offered game play is cosmetic only then one will likely be more entertained watching a TV show than playing because the game offers very little value added fun factor even if it's conceptually amusing.
3. Cohesion of internal logic. If something is a bird one day it shouldn't be a dolphin the next. Especially in a persistent sandbox game players need to be afforded context and information such that they are able to make informed choices. If players are given open in game access to all relevant information; item stats, skill effects, UI fidelity, FX fidelity, removal of bugs. Then they can focus solely on playing the game, be that making fits, buying items, playing matches, planing battles et al If however something about the game engine/UI is broken or constraining then it distracts players from a focus on the game and their enjoyment of it. It forces them to troubleshoot etc rather than play and thus it violates immersion. One should spend effort working at playing the game, not working just to be able to play the game (this includes things like attributes and mechanics functioning in a counter intuitive manner and/or not being clearly presented within the game interface).

I detect a wounded former Mass Effect fanboy. ;) lol, yeah I admit used to love Bio back in the day before the epic fail (banning peoples accounts for criticizing your game is pretty low) of course I could say the same thing about Steam, who's customer service to me was so bad that by the time I got their (totally forum letter, and partly misspelled) "support" reply I'd not only already fixed the problem myself (this was after days of trouble shooting mind you) but completely finished playing the game as well (Dues Ex: Human Revolution). The last straw there was that the message essentially said "that's not our problem take it up with the Devs" which might have been fair if not for the fact that my first message to them included a message from the Devs saying the same thing and directing me to Steam "support".
There are other examples of this too, the lovely DRM iteration on an Assassin's Creed title which shall remain nameless lol (used to be a total Bliz fanboi for years, don't even talk to me about them in general these days ) etc.
In short I'm a AAA gaming bitter vet, hence the "deliver on their promises" aspect. Because a game can be whatever, and players can choose to participate or not. If however I game claims to be something and then development/publishing provides no meaningful follow through that's pretty much running a con on people, albeit a legal one.
I understand that nothing is perfect, and that unforeseen, sometimes unfixable, problems arise in game development. But there's a substantial difference between "we don't actually know how to do this" and "we've decided it's not worth our time to try and deliver on our promises". The former is just part of life, the latter is, in my opinion, deeply shortsighted and selfish.

My first answer is if I find it fun or engages me intellectually. There is no criteria for me that would make me dismiss a game off hand other than if its on a format I don't have. But then I brought a PS3 just for Dust.
For the second answer, see my first answer.
As for the third, immersion to me to simply feeling part of something. Games like Halo and Titanfall are great fun but they don't engage me in their world like Eve, Dust and I suspect Legion and Valkyrie will do.

First and foremost, gameplay always comes before graphics for me. I'm happy with stick figures if the game is fun. I'm a big RPG player, so story is important to me, progression is important to me. Mass Effect comes somewhere around the highest mark a game can reach, even if you include Mass Effect 3. I like to be drawn into a game and its surroundings.
I expect it to be somewhat balanced, relatively stable, and have a good "feel". When it comes to first person shooters specifically, there's a certain "feel" to the gunplay. Call of Duty probably has it better than any other. DUST isn't bad. Some games like Battlefield have really not had it, and made me feel very uncomfortable.
Immersion is, as I hinted at above, huge for me. As Kevall said, Titanfall is a great game (great gunplay feel in that game too, and way better vehicle balance than DUST), but it doesn't immerse. I have no draw to go and play that game every day. Whether it's an NPC world like Mass Effect, or the politics and intrigue of DUST, I want a story, and I want to be a part of that story and have an effect on story. The universe needs to feel like it's all there, even if I am not exploring all of it.

What is a game to you, and what makes you pick Game A over Game B?
A game is something I enjoy. Something I do to 'break free' from reality (or be mired in it depending on the game type).
What do you typically expect from a game?
Typically, I expect a game to immerse me into the game itself. Immersion is a key factor in most 'addictive' games in that it brings you into the game in such a way that you feel as part of the game world itself, but you also feel as if you're having a good impact on the game.
Beyond that, I also expect games to be fun, feel good, and feel 'right'.
What does the word "Immersion" mean to you and how can you relate it to Dust/Legion?
Immersion is about engaging the players. Bringing players into the world, encapsulating them in lore, history, and then giving them the power to change the present, and thus alter the course of the future. With relation to DUST / Legion, this means that should we have an impact felt in DUST / Legion, it should also ripple out and affect EVE (the effect being more or less dramatic depending on how, and what was done).

1.) A game is a means to be entertained or engaged. *obligatory "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED"*
2.) I expect to be entertained and engaged. This happens most often when I feel like what I do, matters. Or in the case of a linear story, that I feel immersed in the particular world/story to progress it and accomplish w/e goal I may have.
3.) When I think of immersion I think of how engrossed I feel in a particular world. I think of Halo. How the AI made me forget at times that i was fighting a computer. How grunts and elite's reacted to me...how fighting hunters on legendary were so exhilarating. So wonderful.
I think of mass effect. how I felt like the story was something I was uniquely creating.
I think of Morrowind. How I might create some weird ass spell and be able to jump across the continent in 5 leaps. Or go and **** up the storyline quest and kill the God of Vivec or w/e (this is all off the top of my head) and still I moved forward. How I would visit a city and the weather would progress...how it felt to experience a day/night cycle.
To feel my controller vibrate as the sun lowered my health as a vampire.
I think of reading stories in the War Room from God's Architect about how goals were set and plans made, and players executing and the record of things like Kadlina and the wars...of the fall of TP, how it felt for me personally.
How can I relate it?
You have to make it feel engrossing. Make it feel like you are operating in a universe called New Eden.
It should be evident from the moment you enter the game that you have stepped into the game...I think of the FF presentation where instead of the load screens we have now it showed your immortal consciousness moving to the clone location...that was immersive.
I want every action to feel like I'm having an effect.
Things like giving public contracts a context, making FW feel like you know the land you are fighting on...to allowing mercs to make the way they look look distinguishing. I want to see a flamboyant merc on the enemy team I know and find him by the crazy colors he sports on his suit.
There's a lot of ways to feel immersion...and the main way I feel immersed on dust is through PC. The fact I can waste hours of my life trolling someone because they lost some matches...because they lost some virtual land...because they affiliate themselves with a particular portion of MH's available planets or districts...that wars have been fought because of mistakes, or insults, through sabotage and subterfuge?
That it can be as unforgiving as anything to the point of 99% being owned by 1 alliance..to as carebear where the expectation is that if you only have one district if it's taken someone will take it back or give you another...it's got more sandbox than anything else I've felt playing dust.
I don't know the extent of what's feasible for dust...but I've proposed things that would make me feel more immersed in dust.
For example I've heard people give pro's/con's to the credibility of improving FW to allow you to choose where you want to fight...as in I pick this district and battle...and it as you can imagine has some problems.
I personally would simply enjoy having FW contracts show up like the event contracts did in chromosome.
it would list all currently progressing battles and list impending battles about to begin to allow you to choose where you were fighting.
I would love to be able to choose what battle I'm fighting in FW.
I humbly ask you support my candidacy for CPM1

1: Is it Dreamfall: The Longest Journey? If not, pass.
2: I expect to run around areas mashing the square button the entire game. Living on a vague hope, a tired wish, that one day I will open a bathroom stall only to find a barefooted Frenchman sitting atop a unicycle, before giving a single accepting nod, as if to say, "It's time."
3: The only true immersion is when you die in real life if you die in the game. So far, only Bioshock 2 has held up to this industry standard. When I play Dust, I want to feel the gravel being violently smacked across my rear as I go sledding, without a sled. I want to feel the emotional guilt as I napalm those VC running through the underbrush of the jungle. I want to feel death's sweet kiss as the bayonet plunges into me. I want the cold feeling of knowing I will never see the sunlight again, as my corpse erodes into the damp and decrepit rat tunnels under Khe Sanh. Also I want to taste Quafe in real life, which is more important.
