Never compare Dust to the Soul series. One is a cult classic series and the other is a half finished almost semi cult FPS.
If you are going to compare it to a Souls game then Dust 514 is Dark Souls 2, the bastard child that did not live up to its original hype or vision.

The horrible PSN surely didn't help this game. That's another thing as difficult as Dark Souls. It was nearly impossible to find the free tactical edition thing they did in that crazy Dropbox if never seen.

Dust 514, Dark Souls, and Armored Core are games that harken a bit to the way of old games. You didn't have much NPE, if any. The difficulty rating was pretty high, with the game killing you brutally and laughing at you. Games has soften up quite a bit since the old times. It's a lot more hand holding and entitled gamers about than it was then.

I like to think that dust is the armored core of our time, with multiplayer on a scale I wanted since the PS1 versions.
FROMSOFTWARE did both the Armored Core lineage and the Souls lineage. They know how to make a game subtle.

That feels a lot more accurate to me.
Huge amount of choices, but only so many things are optimal. A lot of stats and quirks that are opaque to a newbie. Fun for the hardcore, bland and a bit repetitive to the casual observer.
(For the record, I loved Armored Core.)
