I only do skirm or dom with decent or better squad mates now. I can't handle it anymore. The only other time I do it is when I want a challenge of holding an objective solo.

I do ambush ALL OF THE TIME. It is the absolute best gamemode period. Hands down. I'll tell you the two funnest things to do in ambush
1) Come in with proto uplinks and hives and Swarms. Fit whatever else you want. make sure you have one or two forgers you are squaded up with. On almost every map there is at least one strong spot for med/high ground av. Call in a gorgon, fly to one of these spots, put down an uplink and swarm all of the **** you can until the forgers come in. Then AV the whole time. If you are like me, run logi with a rep tool and dual rep two forgers who are forge sniping and taking out vehicles. Plus a donut on one of them. 3 people can easily get 1 to 2 orbitals a game. It's awesome. Make sure the forgers you are in a squad with don't come in until you put down your uplink. It's easier that way. Since you are the swarmer it is less often for you to get kills. Remember that the first volley of missiles you launch you should shoot in the opposite direction than the vehicle and then lock on to the vehicle and swarm directly. The idea is that the two volleys will hit in immediate succession and do maximum alpha damage. you can finish off or severely weaken any vehicle. Using that and just one good forge blast can actually beat a triple rep maddy b/c the timing of all 3 hits is so close it emulates a high alpha damage single shot.
2) Come in forge and summon a tanked out LAV and roll with one other forger. I prefer methane with a nitrus, complex 60mm armor plate, complex light armor rep. Even if all you have is a MLT forge it's fine. And just run people over and get and **** tanks. Rinse Repeat. You die a bit more often this way but still relatively fun. Just started doing it today mostly.
