So I was reading this post and figured I'd like to see the re-addition of suit variations in Legion...but on a more dramatic scale.
Previously we had Type 1/2, Series A/B and vk.0/vk.1
What these turned into were just the racial suits that we have now...as having two versions of every racial suit would just become too much content. To put it simply, a type 1 Caldari assault was armor based, while the type 2 was shield based. A type 1 heavy would be slow and have more low slots, while the type 2 was faster, had more shields, but replaced some low slots with highs.
BUT, what if we brought back variations as a DRAMATIC change rather than these minor racial variances. For example, having the type 1 Assault be a very quick regenerating suit with good mobility but low base health (similar to our current assaults, but faster regen), and the type 2 be a heavily armored/shielded assault with mobility about the same as a logi, and two light weapon slots.

No, I didn't. The current commandos we have may be similar to that, but they are much closer related to Sentinels than Assaults. Plus, with commandos not really finding a home in Legion, (and CCP wanting to make assaults have two light weapon slots), this is a good compromise. Anyways, let me continue.
Logistics type 2 could be geared for demolition. Right now we don't have a single suit in the game that has a bonus directly to AV related tasks (granted, there are some bonuses that make certain suits better at the role, but they aren't directly specified for AV). You wouldn't have quite as many equipment slots, and still have about the same mobility as logistics, but they would have one of two unique traits...either the ability to use heavy weapons (but no sidearm slot), or the ability to have two grenades.
Sentinel type 2 is something I've been wanting for a very long time but sadly never got here with the racial heavies. A suit with a heavy weapon AND a light weapon. The HP values possible on these suits would also be much greater than any current sentinel. I would even possibly remove the ability to sprint or use vehicles with this suit. With all of the upsides, you have the biggest downsides, like an insanely slow movement speed and large hitbox. It's meant for point defense, but needs to be supported and can't run away easily.
Finally the Scout type 2 would obviously be a pilot suit. I'm not much for vehicles, and vehicle balance is always a tricky one...but I would love to see a very fast, very hard to detect suit with possibly an affinity for sidearms/pistols. Very limited in terms of suit modules, it would increase the effectiveness of vehicles in ways that doesn't affect power. For instance, making dropships more responsive, or tanks easier to control...turret roation speed, accuracy of missile turrets, etc.
Again these are just ideas as I'm guessing CCP already has plans for how they want to create their "role" system, but having variations besides just different amounts of armor/shields or slots would feel much more diverse and fun.

T II ships in EVE usually has two types, so this could work. How about something along the lines of this:
Scout- one is based on the races EWAR (ex. Caldari would get bonuses for say a jammer), and one would be for recon (what we have now
Pilot- one would be based on the races tank (for vehicles) (ex. Gallente would be for repairers), and one for the gank (again, for vehicles) (again, Gallente would get bonuses towards either hybrid damage and falloff, or blaster damage and falloff) (sidenote: What if a vehicle, possibly a tech 2 only thing, but they would get a special bonus if you used a pilot suit with them? just an idea)
Assault- one would be for the races tank, and one for the races gank (look at pilot, take away the vehicle stuff) (sidenote: the gank one can be the assault with the 2 light weapons, and the tank one could be what we have now) logi- not sure

Umm you have heard Z want's to give 2 variations AFTER faction choice haven't you? I think your proposed variations are too different, instead take the suit and choose 2 points that make it that suit then accentuate one while taking the other.
So Type 1 Scouts are fast, so they get bonuses to KinCats and Cardiac Regulators, enabling them to achieve insanely high stamina pools. Meanwhile Type 2 Scouts are very difficult to detect and give huge fitting bonuses to dampeners.
Type 1 Assaults are damage dealers, so they get bonuses to weapon based mods like damage mods or other ones we get in the future. Type 2 Assaults meanwhile are all about gratatouitous amounts of rep capacity so they get bonuses to rep based modules.
Type 1 Sentinels are your Tanks, so they get huge bonuses to EHP modules, but retain more severe penalties. Type 2's on the other hand are suppresors so they get huge bonuses to max ammo and magazine capacities.
