... it's pretty easy to math out their DPS, just remember that the SMG has shorter range,higher ROF, an actual optic and less kick, while the magsec has longer range, lower ROF, higher damage per shot and no optic.

quite odd then.. if the magsec has longer range it should have an optic on it too :/

you mean dmg per shot or damage per second? cause roughly ( at standard).. (dmg*RoF/60=dps)
SMG is 21dmg 1000 rpm 350 dps
and
magsec = 32dmg 667 rpm(rounded up) 355.5 dps
hmm i guess since raw dps mag is higher but lacks a scope and has the charge up time while SMG has a scope but slightly less dps and no charge up time.. in terms of skills you are right SMG needs the dispersal skill while mag dosnt... its just odd since having tested them i felt more like the mag was a little gimpy vs smg.. perhaps because SMG might have been more designed to be a main weapon for logi runners to have some self defence?
maybe its just me but lack of scope and charge up time dosnt sit well with me nor the race's weapon..while the SMG with no charge up and a nice scope seems to work well. tbh the magsec should have a goddamn scope since its supposed to be the longer range full auto sidearm.

My main uses both. SMG is useful as a reaction tool ie you got surprised or your main tool isn't a spray and pray ie plasma cannon/sniper rifle.
Whilst I have proficiency with SMG, I've only dipped into MagSec and it is not another SMG as much as a medium range rail rifle. It has some very good things going for it, but you need to be situationally aware as that 0.3s is not going to help you against a short range weapon. It is an excellent backup to a shotgun up there with an assault scrambler. So I see its main use as a sidearm if your main is short range ie Shotty or even mass driver.
I do run an outfit on a min scout that has a MagSec and a SMG for giggles and as a test platform. I run around with the SMG and if I get the drop on someone or am supporting from further back will toggle out to the MagSec.
Turrent - the sound a tankers pants makes when he finds out the four swarm militia doing squats around him aren't AFK.

I expected the Magsec to be OP when it was released in 1.8. However, I've found I wasted a couple 100,000 skill points in it. I can't seem to kill anything in it, as when I'm firing, my enemy seems to be moving too fast for my magsec to follow.
I don't use OP weapons, I AM OP.

Both. They're both great. After I played with my gun game a bit more, I found I love the MagSec. But for those starting out, SMG is a very nice side weapon to have. I've killed more people with my standard SMG than I ever expected to. SMG has no kick compared to the MagSec.

I have prof in both, and while i like the Mag, it's unforgiving if your timing or your gun game happens to be off that day. SMG is still a great all-around weapon, you can't go wrong there, and at prof 4, it's a beast up close; great finisher.

the best gun to switch fast and fire in the city as a side arm is the smg. but i run the magsec because if you can control the kick it is nice to rip someone up at a little range when they only have armor left.

I have both Proto and i like both but i think SMG is better cuz of less kick more rounds in clip and overall usefulness for example you could run SMG and NK or SMG and MAGsec

Is the range of the Magsec the same as the assault rifle or less?
If you max out it's skills can it be an effective main weapon?

Yeah, if you're good enough. Usually if I use it I die because of the slow turning speed, although that's a plus at long range.

As a result, if I were you, I would wait before spending any SP on sidearms (and the current king, the SMG, in particular) as the competitive landscape will likely change. |

I hope it gets buffed, or at least not nerfed. (T-T )
That being said, I really like it. It has range about as good as the AR, but it isn't nearly that effective because it kicks a lot. So I find that the "sweet" spot is somewhere between smg range and AR range, which is nice because most confrontations seem to be in that range when you run around as a logi scout.
It seems to be more of a support weapon though. Maybe with operation at lvl 5 it can pass as a main weapon, but right now I find that you're going to be getting more assists than anything unless you surprise the enemy. You have a small window to get a kill, but (or so it seems to me) the kick increases over time, so if you haven't "won" by the time you reach the halfway point of your clip, you probably won't succeed.
that or I suck.
Anyways, I think I'm going to practice with it until it becomes my gun of choice... 'cause I'm a dumb blueberry, herpa derp. (T-T )
Also I think it makes a cute sound when you shoot. It's like a Chibi- version of the SL-R Assault Rail Rifle.

CCP Rattati said on a post somewhere that the SMG was OP and the Flaylock is UP. But again, we'll see.

I went using magsec on my minlogi yesterday - 3 kills 10 deaths.
I don't use OP weapons, I AM OP.
