I came into Dust because I heard of EVE. A game that is often used for the famous "learning cliff" image, to show that EVE's learning curve is steeper than steep. I liked the idea of having an FPS that is far more than a bit of simple gameplay. In the end, the shooting mechanics turned out to be very vanilla and customizability isn't really much to talk about.
However, dropships are a different story. When you hear that someone is a dropship pilot, you'll have a certain amount of respect, as anyone who actually tried to fly those damn things can attest. (Note: I can fly the normal ones moderately well, but ADS are too crazy for me)
And this is where I'm coming from. What I hope to see in Legion, is a sense of awe that you get for ANY dedicated operator of a vehicle. I'm not saying that the vehicles should be hard to use - Anyone should be able to drive an LAV or shoot a tank turret. What I'm saying is that the skill ceiling of those vehicles should be extremely high. Currently, a tank is a bit hard to get a feeling for, but once you do, you put on your triple reppers and kill everyone in Honey Badger mode. But what if it was more involved than that? Imagine, for a crazy example, the ability for LAVs to drop mines with a module. Even while airborn. Now imagine a tanker, going on his merry way. The road that he's following has a slope on one side. And LAV driver comes, activates his boost, uses the slope as a ramp and plants a mine right on top of the tank, while still airborn. That's actually a good showing of skill. It requires battlefield awareness/intel, the ability to time your jump right and to find room to make use of your booster. It's clever use of the environment. It's still low on the skill curve - A beginner might pull it off. But it's good to illustrate my point.
Can you make vehicles in Legion hard to utilize to their fullest? Like, *really* hard? Infantry will always be taken for granted - Even if each role may very well have demanding skill requirements - , but vehicles are different.
P.S. I'd also love to see flexibility for varying playstyles. A good team should be allowed to man a tank and its big turret separately. A solo player should be allowed to install auto-tracking small turrets (or a tracking module), so that the functionality is still available - Possibly with an efficiency drawback or the need to manually select the targets first. Hell, I'd love to replace the cargo bay of a dropship with a huge module, like a CRU/supply depot combo, or the turret slot on the LAV with a four-seat module, to allow an entire squad to ride an unarmed ride. |
