Im a little tired of going around a corner and having a heavy waiting for me. Is it worth skilling range and/or precision? Running scout is not an option

i run a mini scout which has a better passive scan than larger suits and when it runs persision mods you have alot better situational awareness.. personally i think to get to where you want to be investing in passive scan mods would make your suit too week. try using an active scanner in your equipment slot - you might give the game away slightly but you will be allot better off combat wise when you get there.

Get Amplification and Precision to III.
Your precision SHOULD be enough to passively pick up heavies, and the extra range will help. At level three, the assault will scan 13m away.
It does make a difference. Unless they damp, you'll know that they are they before you turn the corner.

Running scout is not an option Scan precision for assault with no skills is 50, for logi its 45. Profile of a heavy is 60. Thus, your precision is already enough to pick up a heavy. Increasing precision will not help with detecting heavies at all (though it may help with detecting other mediums).
Probably range is the problem you're having. There is lag on when the passives show up, so if you or the target are moving you can be well inside scan radius before the target appears. Investing in the range amplification skill will reduce the impact of this problem, though only slightly (especially for assaults, who only gain 1 metre of scan per level).
It might also be a good idea to walk rather than run when you're within a few metres of a suspected heavy camping spot. This will give your passive scans time to catch up and you'll also be able to turn and run more quickly if you need to. |

How passive scanning SHOULD work:
If your scan precision is less than the target's profile, they'll show up on your scanners as long as they're within range.
How passive scanning ACTUALLY works:
Most enemies will show up if they're in range and above your precision. Sometimes they won't. If it's a vehicle, and they're not in your field of vision (but not necessarily line of sight), they probably won't light up even though vehicle profile is supposedly massive. And quite often high-profile targets will randomly be invisible for no reason. Most often when they're out of your line of sight, but occasionally even when you're looking at them.
Obstacles aren't meant to make a difference, but sometimes it seems like they do. Heavies can't get low enough profile to hide from Scouts, but sometimes they don't show up. Vehicle profile is stupidly high, but they often don't appear on your scanners regardless. Firing weapons doesn't make you more visible, but sometimes you'll see a flicker of a target behind a wall every time they shoot. |

They are both worth skilling to 5 and I would add that if you aren't doing it already ALL the dropsuit upgrade tree skills which provide a passive boost each level should be your priority, since these provide passive gains regardless of whether or not you use a module and these gains are applied to every suit you use. Get the base values as high as you can then start padding the features with modules.

It can be somewhat helpful, and a mod or 2 isn't the worst way to go on a medium suit.
Got them to max, and I can spot a heavy around a corner with no mods on a assault suit.
