I completely appreciate that the game is designed to be played so you can't just go proto all the time - is it really a case of running militia matches for a couple of days when I run out of higher end suits and end up down to the last few thousand ISK?

I advice you to get good and to stop being a f@g.

Do that then get banned.

Play in ADV gear, preferably in a squad; play carefully enough that you win but don't die.

Nanite injectors are useful here.

I've had 5 death games but only lost one suit, embarrassingly frequently.

There are many ways to get isk, and the way he told you absolutely sucks! You're not here to create/delete characters aren't you? You're here to play!

So you can play in basic/cheap advanced suit for like a full week end and make lots of isk. Also you can farm ambushes as it will give you more money in a shorter amount of time.
Or you can play in proto gear with a good squad and be care full so you wont lose your suit (it's a funnier, better but harder way to farm isk I think^^).

People with hundreds of millions got it a few different ways:

1. PC locking. A lot of the directors and top people in corporations that continuously locked districts have a lot of cash from the broken mechanic.
2. Money from the conversion to Uprising. Beta had a LOT of stuff drop. Like, getting 20 dropships in a match (they came in packs of 5 and things drops FAR more frequently). All that stuff that people had was removed and given market value. My father went from ~30 million to 260+ million over night.
3. Playing a whole bunch. 8 minute ambush game, getting 150,000 a game works out to be 1,125,000 an hour. Pretty simply there.
4. Getting a lot of money a match. On a decent match in Domination, I can pull in over 330,000. The highest I have ever gotten was like 770,000. Pull those numbers and don't lose too much money and you have millions fast.
5. Always running cheap suits. If you use a Basic Dropsuit with a Basic Light Weapon, you can have something that costs about 12-16k with Complex Modules. The suit I use the most often is basic Assault (BPO), Basic Rail, 2 Complex Shield Modifiers, Toxin SMG, 2 basic plates, and a compact nanohive. It is less than 10k while having close to 700 EHP. It doesn't matter how little you play: if you are isk positive, you will make money.

Knight of 6 shows the idea. Just don't lose ISK in a match. It is really that simple.

Creating and deleting alts is a sure way to get banned. Eventually. And sad really. DonGÇÖt be one of them.

How long have you been playing? How massive is your inventory?

I have the most fun with suits I call GÇ£shitfitsGÇ¥. Take any and all suits from your inventory that you can use but donGÇÖt want to (MLT/STD whichever you have accumulated) and fill them with modules you do not care for. This is pure profit as you will never restock these suits. An example of my shitfit:

MLT Gallente medium frame with: basic armour repair, MLT plate, basic profile dampener, CreoDron Breach AR, MLT SMG, MLT locus grenade, MLT nanohive. DoesnGÇÖt matter how many times you die, itGÇÖs still profit.

I have been playing for a while so my inventory is a clusterfuck and I run these fits regularly. And since we will never see a player market, this is the only way to make a profit from items you do not want to use. If your inventory is not large enough for this, then MLT/STD/ADV it is until you have accumulated enough ISK for your needs.
