Ok, gang, the election is finally on the table with some semi-official word from the Shanghai team.
We are looking at holding a debate for the CPM1 candidates on the Biomassed podcast to help the community get to know the hopefuls a little better and let you compare and contrast them.
SO... on to the fun stuff.
1) Which candidates are you most interested in hearing from? Not just the big names but any announced candidate you are intrigued by?
2) What's your top question that you want posed to them so you can compare their answers and see how they match with the type of player you want representing you?
We are looking at the 01JUN live show as our initial debate and we want YOU the community to drive the content for the show. (Yeah, might be asking for trouble with that one!)
As an added bit of feedback, who would like us to try to bring on and guest moderate with me when we poke, prod, and generally have a fun and informative session with the candidates?

Questions:
How should the classes interact with each other? What should scouts be for? What should assaults be doing? Etc. In short: What is your idea of balance between the classes. What is their ROLES.
Specifically, how would you change the classes to MEET these goals.
What about the State of Vehicles and Infantry? Tank v Tank, Infantry v Tank and the likes. What is the ROLE of Vehicles and Dropships?
What would you change to meet your ideal balance between Vehicles and Infantry?
I want to hear these topics from the Following:
Appia Aeon Zatara Cross Soraya Pokey

The CPM as an advisory council more than anything. We can merely suggest to CCP that 'x' role may be better than 'y' role with little nuanced fat-cutting here and there . To elaborate on your questions, however:
Class Roles: As hot button as Legion is, I like their concept of the roles. Currently in Dust 514, everything is about killing people or preventing people from being killed (in the case of the Logistics). You get right down to it, just about everything revolves around the role of Slayer, just with different nuances and specializations. It's cool though, there is a greater majority of people that -WANT- to shoot face than help the guy next to them shoot face.
Legion kind of covers that, to some degree. Commandos were always sort of shoe-horned in between Sentinels and Assaults and what wound up happening was Assaults kinda went on the back-burner. Sentinels are for point defense (though LAVs through a pipe-wrench in that whole deal), Assault are for Frontline Combat, and Commandos are.... B...both? So, it makes sense to circumvent the problem and give Assaults two light weapons - then there's a clear and definite difference between the roles.
Anyway, the general gist is that dropsuits need to have focused roles that differ from one another beyond just alternate methods of murdering other players. That's something more for specializations, I feel. Scouts are a little bit more tricky because they're more focused on EWAR, and will always (by my theory) be in some sort of limbo until we legitimately sit down and iron out exactly how EWAR is supposed to work. The All-or-Nothing, Scan-or-Not-Scanned style of EWAR is a poor display because no matter how you try and balance it, someone is going to get the **** end of the stick.
It's also very very limited in spectrum, only having the TacNet scanning system in play - which is great and all but it feels a little lack luster.
Vehicles:
Same thing with dropsuits. You ever get the sense that Vehicles were always bumbling around in the balance department? Think we all have and I'm almost positive it's because no-one sat down and thought of what their role on the battlefield was. To me, it seems like they were put into the game for the sake of being put into the game. Dropships and LAVs are good for transport but then you have HAVs which are just slayers with a lot of offensive/defensive capability and near immunity to a lot of small arms. It gets kind of hard to balance that sort of thing when they are practically designed to be better than infantry.
Point Defense? Force Projection? Transportation? What are these things supposed to do, exactly? It seemed there was a good start a long time ago in closed beta, with Marauders being very very powerful options (so powerful they were removed) but I think they just needed more focus/specialization. There should be a sacrifice for everything to keep the scales balanced.
Ideal Balance:
What seems clear is me is that in a game of set team limits, it should never take more than one person to kill any one other person - but in the same sense, teamwork should be OP as hell. One of the suggestions that I've recently brought up was making Axis Repair Tools more viable and upping the incentive to use them so that Vehicles + Infantry = Insanely powerful toolset. I haven't really touched up on this too much though, so lemme get back to you when I've had more thought on it.
Closing Statement:
If anyone disagrees -PLEASE- say something! I'm open to other opinions and have actually made revisions to previous stand-points based on the community's feedback. Hit me up on Twitter or Skype (info in my thread) and make your voice heard!

Doh! Really wanted to answer the NPE one, too
I want to see what happens with the Plasma Cannon in Hotfix Alpha and it's (potential) new variants afterward. IMO, vehicles aren't going to be fix just with a quick balance pass, as stated they need to have a hard look at what they're supposed to offer to the game that nothing else can do right now (vehicle vs vehicle is not a good answer, it just defeats the purpose xD)
Swarm Launchers are definitely something that needs a look at and I'm excited to see what CCP Rattati is planning on doing with the useless Assault variant. Maybe increase it's range at the expense of damage so it's more oriented toward drop-ships/long-distance targets? I wouldn't mind seeing the Flaylock Pistol be turned into a proper AV sidearm; jack up it's damage profile against vehicles and it'd be an interesting contender that would have a legitimate role that no other sidearm could perform.
I'll be able to give better input after Hotfix Alpha drops on June 4th, remind me then

Would love to be on biomassed at some point. Really enjoyed the last one. Being the UK you'd have to have like 5 hours earlier so I could join you. And even then it would considered late over here. But I don't want to to inconvenience the other candidates or yourselves too much. Needs of the many and all that....
Anyhow....
The NPE is a tricky one because I'm very much of the opinion that simply sticking a bunch of tutorials at the beginning of the game is a complete waste of time. Players invariably skip them, thinking they know better or they become too much of a class room and turn off players. In fact the only piece of straight out, direct advice that the game need give a new player is join a corp ASAP.
The other problem with NPE as far as Dust is concerned is that server side hotfixes will not be enough to improve it. There'll have to be some substantial UI changes in the game itself in order to better serve the new player. And to be honest, I think that the time needed to do that would be better spent doing it for Legion, and getting it right for day one for that product.
All is not lost however for Dust as improvments in Eve's UI and corp mechanics coming up over the next year should make it easier to compensate for the lack of Dusts NPE using the Eve client. It's not the best solution I grant you but I think such an approach, will bring benefits without tying up Dev time with the limited team working on Dust right now.
So having said that, everything that I say I'd want in the NPE here, is going to be based on the assumption that it'll be developed for Legion first, with the hope that it can make it into Dust sometime after.
The NPE needs to be closely integrated with all the systems that will have to be in place in legion for its launch. Fitting, market, progression, PvE, PvP, salvage, trading etc, will all need elements of the NPE in them from minute one in a Merc's career.
Training as you do is more efficient and enjoyable than reading wall o' text 101. I know its odd me saying that when I currently send 31 emailed 101's to each new member of D-UNI but if CCP had considered having a proper NPE from launch..........
You also have to make the assumption that a new player will know nothing of New Eden. Sounds obvious but the problem with Dust was that the lack of NPE was due to CCP's assumption that players would've done some research before downloading it. The lack of proper information immediately limited your potential player base.
So Legions NPE will have to explain EVERYTHING. Boring and tedious I know for our vets as they have to plough through it all but utterly essential for the games growth. This is not dumbing down. It's smart because it ensures that the game has as high a retention level as possible, leading to more people for you shoot in the face. More players is what we all want.
I'd just like to add on a personal note. I get a finger nails on blackboard feeling whenever anyone bleats about x, y or z being 'dumbed down'. Not everyone is Einstein, nor are they all Forrest Gump but explanation leading to understanding is preferable to ignorance. I say this as someone who has trained people in my job for 20 years and that mantra has served me well.
But explaining everything in the game can be done without the player being aware that they're being schooled. UI can be used creatively to show benefit as long as a context is given to a player within that UI. Training A can lead to B and combining C brings you D. All of that can be done without a word having been spoke or read.
Separating the NPE so its a feature that can be 'skipped' for the convenience of a Vet would be a very bad move. There'd be too many skipping it because they think they know it all already, resulting in no NPE and leading us to the situation we have now in Dust. For a Free to Play game, NPE is priority one, two and three. With no incentive to play the game for a month because they ponied up a months subscription, new players will need to be given a sense of achievement and immediacy from day one so that they are still playing on day thirty, leading to them getting a name on a sculpture and waking up with a tattoo in Reykjavik two years later.
There's already been some great ideas in Legions UI thread. Nearly all share the same core idea, giving the player a context in which to place that new knowledge. For trainee in anything, context is everything.

Absolutely. But tool tips are something that should be able to be turned off once a player is up to speed with the mechanics of the game. Because as I explained above being able to skip a tutorial is a bad idea, tool tips shouldn't be the only thing in an NPE. More Informative and clearer infomation presented in a permanent UI providing that much needed context will help both new and older players as well.

Put this question forth for the discussion. If elected you will be working with other candidates after the election, do you feel comfortable working with the other candidates and how do you feel your strengths will interact with theirs? Synergy is important in an elected council in my opinion, so this question is to feel out that area of the candidates abilities.

Supporting Kevall about timing as I have same UTC too, ET+1 as I think as well in his description about how debates should go as some players might have zero notion of what we are talking about, so all kind of abbreviations should not exist for now, at least in first few episodes, considering language as well, we must consider by default that some players know nothing about game. In other case we will exclude those that really don't know anything, and they will lose interest in hearing podcasts with NPE must be ..., AE were true power of DNS, NDA must be done asap before DT, ET, Sentinel must be called heavy as well as scout dragonfly, because some players might hear of those suits but don't know what we are talking about precisely. This kind of small things can make harder for people to perceive and to decide whether you speak sense or not.

"Deer" god, not referring to some aspects doesn't mean people have no ideas on them unless they want to keep it secret until others say point of view. At least I see no questions on economy and market considering prices, even knowing that recently was announced a no-no to a dust market which is a disaster unless we are having some on Legion.
