Currently in Dust, weapon variants have higher meta levels than the standard ones...even if they are the same level (standard, advanced, proto).
Meta just refers to how rare or spedialized a weapon is. For example, the base weapon would have average stats, whereas a high meta weapon would be really good at doing one specific thing, while very poor at general use.
For example, a breach mass driver that might deal massive direct damage, but have a very small blast radius would have a high meta level compared to a breach mass driver that had a decent splash radius and lower damage. The high meta level one would be amazing for anti-vehicle, but be terrible against infantry...whereas the low meta level breach would be average versus both.
A rifle with a high meta level might have more ammo, or have a larger spread with less range...again, specialization instead of just having the rifle be the same but with more damage. I mean, there might be one with higher damage, but it would have to sacrifice a lot in order to get that (more kick, less range, other things of value).
Meta level can also refer to the fitting cost. Generally, weapons with higher meta levels are often easier to fit, therefore you can fit more of them. It's just that with salvage, high meta level items will be hard to find, or rare and very valuable.
The reason why specialization is valued so much though is that higher meta items also have lower fitting costs. This is the reverse of Dust...as normally higher meta items have higher fitting costs.
The reason is simple...if you want to run more specialized fittings, you have to run higher meta items. Those items cost much more sp than the general items. Think of it as the same difference as the current militia and standard items. Militia is more fitting intensive, but you don't have to spend sp to use those items. In order to gain acess to the specialized items that are easier to fit, you have to skill into a role...further emphasizing specialization rather than a spread out sp pool.
