I think that skilling into a basic weapon and sidearm right away is a good idea, because:
- They have cheaper fitting requirements than militia weapons.
- They reload faster, and usually have more ammo in the clip than militia weapons.
- You gain a slight, passive benefit for unlocking the skill (Charge time reduction, recoil reduction etc)
Skilling into basic variants allows you test all the weapons at a relatively low SP cost. If you find something you like, you can add more skill points to it later.
Some more advice:
- Put 3 levels into dropsuit armour/shield upgrades, if the suits you use start out with more armour/shields. These skills increase the amount of health all your suits start with, and eventually you'll want to increase both skills.

Post is under construction, I'll add more soon. Good point sir. "Assault Rifle" is marginally more expensive, but the 12? rounds does make it worth while. It has been mentioned somewhere here on the forums that if you were so inclined you could create an alternate character and skill into each weapon on that character, so you wouldn't burn SP on your main while you tried each out.
I do believe it was in that Logi Code thread. The thought of that went through my mind after posting. I'll be sure to mention it in an edit.
