Hi folks. I joined this game last year when it was released, created a character, but then couldn't devote time to learning every little nuance of what you could/should do with your character.
So I left it until last week to pick it up again. When I logged in, to my shock I have 10.6 million SP, and 1.6 million ISK (I didn't know it accumulated over time).
Over the weekend I've been reading a bit on the best upgrade paths, and what do to. I joined D-Uni, but I've not been in a game yet.
I have some questions.
I've read that I should decide on what role I like playing best, but if I create a new character to try out different roles, will this affect the existing characters SP or ISK? If I just jump in a game with my existing character, could I lose what I have?
From other FPS's that I've played, I tend to PTFO and be upfront rather then snipe or hand back in support. But I've also read a bit that Assaults get ripped by Heavies already.
I'm really just looking for some guidance.
In terms of what I've spent already (probably last year sometime), I have;
Dropsuit lv5, Dropsuit Armour lv3, Dropsuit Core lv2
Weaponry lv5, Handheld lv2
(and for some reason)
Corporation lv5.
I don' have any Dropsuit Command books. |

Well, you have a lot of choices!
Firstly, "PTFO"ing is a laudable thing and if you need ISK assistance with skillbooks send me a mail.
Now. Making a new character will have no effect on your existing character whatsoever. That'll give you 500k starting SP if you want to try out a different role on that character. You'll want to think carefully before spending that much SP so that could be well worth doing.
Could you narrow down the kind of playstyle you want? Do you want quickly regenerating mediocre HP or non-regenerating fantastic HP?
Which weapons have you tried and which have you read up on? If you've read up on a number, which interest you? Do any racial styles particularly interest you?
If you give me a little more information I'll gladly tell you a lot.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

Up close and personal can be done with any suit type, except maybe the Amarr and Caldari assaults and commandos.
Remember that Dropsuit/Weapon skills are useless for vehicles, and Vehicle/Turret skills are useless for dropsuits.
I don't remember if Dropsuit Upgrades gives you a stat bonus, but...
Be careful before you spend SP. There are "fake" skills that CCP has been too lazy to remove that are useless to skill into. For example Dropsuit Command is useless past level 3. If you read the description it doesn't give you anything. All it does is unlock the different suits, and they all get unlocked at level 3.
Speaking of that Weaponry 5 is only good for unlocking Heavy weapons, whereas Weaponry 4 gets you only Shotguns, etc.

Thanks for the replies. I'll create a couple of new characters and see what playstyle I like, and what weapons I like to feel of. I've not read up on weapons yet, there's so much to get my head around before I even got that far, so I've no idea what ones to consider.
I'll get back to you once I've got a bit more of an idea, but I'll leave my current SP intact for now, and not go spending it until I'm better informed. |

since infantry AV has been shat on with tremendous force as of 1.8. I would go into tanks. They are the only thing keeping other tanks in check atm. all modes will have tank spam, if you kill a tank vet with that was most likely using his blaster maddy, then next life he will pull out a multi DMG modded railtank to takr you out, followed by a "get gud" troll message.
can't have fun playing infantry unless someone has "tank duty" covered. |

Here is some light reading for you.
Fox Guide: Getting Started, Your First Steps in DUST Fox Guide: DUST Economics 101, Not going Broke Fox Guide: Frontline, A Medium Frame Infantry Users Manual Fox Guide: Sniping, The Role of the Sniper Fox Guide: Marksman, Taking Sniper to the next level Fox Guide: Swarm Launcher, Unleashing the Swarm Fox Guide: SMG, Unlocking Versatility Fox Guide: Remote Explosives, Unleash the Mad Bomber Fox Guide: Battlefield Roles (A Glossary of terms) Fox Guide: Squad Lead, Stepping up to Command Fox Guide: HMG Heavy, The Mighty Minmatar Minigun & the Titans That Carry Them Fox Guide: Rail Tankers Tactical Handbook
I would suggest starting by reading Fox Guide: Getting Started, Your First Steps in DUST as it gives advice for figuring out what you want to do without spending too many skill points. The 10 million skill points is enough to make you very effective in one role, but will not go far if you scatter them all over the place. So figure out what you want to do, before you spend too much of your SP.

If you have more than one email address you can also setup a second PlayStation Network account, which will allow you to have a second character with Passive skill points active. I find that useful for being able to focus on one role with one character for optimal efficiency, while using the other character to be a generalist and try a bunch of stuff. Of course I did it backwards, as Fox is my generalist and my Alt is the one focussed on one role.

can't have fun playing infantry unless someone has "tank duty" covered. The one down side to this is that even with Milita tanks being way cheaper than they used to be, you will still loose ISK tanking unless you are really good. I lost about 15 million ISK while researching for my Rail Tank guide.

Also, Fuyetama, ask your CEO for ISK for skill books. That is what the tax rate at DUST University is supposed to be for, to generate ISK to help new players buy Skill Books. Explain your situation, how you have 10 million unallocated skill points, but only 1.6 million ISK. With 10 million skill points and only 1.6 million ISK you are going to have to save ISK for Skill Books before you can spend the Skill Points.
Your CEOGÇÖs DUST character is Kevall Longstride. DennieFleetfoot is his EVE character, but EVE characters canGÇÖt transfer ISK to DUST characters, so you may as well sent the mail to Kevall.

I didn't even know you cuold request ISK. I got sent a whole load of emails when I joined D-Uni, but I've not read them all yet. I had a blast in a game recently, and quite liked playing upfront. The sniper role has never been my thing, even in other FPS games. Playing a heavy is good too, but as I'm going to have to specialise, I think assault is it.
Thanks for all the helpful replies. Nice to be part of friendly, helpful community. |
