Destiny has been in development for 4 years BEFORE release. How long was dust developed BEFORE release? Two years?

so much fail in this comment...
Activision is publishing the game. $500 million spent on everything that makes Destiny, knowing Activision, includes DLC, Marketing, cost of making the game, more marketing, and maybe servers (which i doubt, but with the tower thing, there must be some kind of dedicated servers).
Destiny won't just die. They constantly be expanding the "World" through DLC i'm guessing.
Bungie is literally one of the best, FPS devs. You think this game will "ruin" them? You're an idiot. If anything Activision will take the hit, and Bungie makes money either way.
You talk about Economics? How about learning what publishers do compared to what devs do first. |

Nope, when you include all the overhead involved in actually selling a game, it's more like 15-16 million copies at full retail to break even.
Long story short the first Destiny game will almost certainly post a loss, probably a damn big one - however the IP, the universe, may end up raking it in in the long term.
EDIT: And no, Destiny will not be on PC. Not in its first iteration.
EDIT 2: In response to the OP - If you buy a premade gaming tower, you're doing it wrong. Count the number of higher end CPUs, motherboards etc. sold if you want to even get the right order of magnitude. |

- PS4 - 7 million + (pretty solid numbers, credit where it's due)
- XBox one - 3 million + (as of january, MS are being quiet about their more recent numbers)
- Gaming PCs - Impossible to know. Most people build custom rigs if they want to do serious gaming, plus many "normal" PCs can play games just fine, albeit at lower settings. Definitely more than way more 100,000 though, and then there's the whole upgrading a PC vs replacing a console thing.

i agree with this as well. However that still leaves one heck of a gap.
There really is no accurate way to figure out just how many gaming pc's there are out there. I would bet though that there are a lot less gaming pc's than consoles. |

Wiki does NOT LIE! There are all kinds of numbers and best selling PC games to look at. NONE of the lists have Eve online listed. The game JUST reached 500,000+ subscribers feb2013.
Best selling PC game of all time? (Sims 2) 20million copies. We can assume 20million people liked to play sims 2 on their PC. That says a LOT about the PC community. Minecraft 15million sold, WOW 14mill, battfield 11mill, simcity 2000 5mill.
We can assume there are atleast 20,000,000 pc gamers .
NOW, according to SONY, OVER 70,000,000 Ps3's have been sold since release. Conisder HALF of those 'replacements' and you have an estimate of the PS3 player base.
