I already dislike the way it sounds. Now, I admit, it is still early, and I suspect that your idea on a new progression has yet to be really explained that well. That said, I am going to assume it is everything I fear.
Making it so I have to grind all the way through a progression tree to get 1 weapon or a few mods is more that a tad bit silly, and takes away from the variety and potential choices that helped make dust slightly not bad. I could easily train into a scout suit and stick an assault rifle on it without having to train into something else to get that rifle.
With this new system, if I want to put a scrambler rifle on my Minmatar anything, it sounds like I'll have to train into, say, amarr assault. That is assuming I am still allowed to do such a thing.
Taking away so much power over our skill training is taking away a lot of our ability to really modify and choose how we fit our suits. Dust and Legion were supposed to be sandbox games, like Eve. That means that we get to have those choices to make for ourselves. This new progression system would be going against this theme, and just annoy a lot of people.
The Current Dust system isn't exactly terrible, but it has some rather difficult problems that should be rectified for Legion.
The first, is the intent for massive sp wastage. I say wastage because there are numerous skills that provide no benefit but must be trained to get to other things that are actually useful. An example is dropsuit command. It has no bonus, but must be trained to get access to skills for frames, and has no benefit in training past level 3.
Also, a lot of skills could be combined into one, like all of the various sharp shooter skills. They use to be all one, and, while I do understand separating them, I dislike the fact you guys did so and them made the skills so damn expensive. A good reason to not do that was because this and decisions like it made for this giant wall of sp that kept a lot of new players from being able to enter the game.
Now, the real problem facing the Dust skill tree was that it was not really user friendly, and it was outright hostile to new players who had never played Eve before. So, to help alleviate this, I suggest combining your idea with the old skill system. You remember the mastery system in Eve, right? Well, make a Dust mastery system. Make it more simplified, though, so as to show people what skills and such they should consider training for this role, or that.
Do that, and new players suddenly have some guidance, and everyone can still do whatever the **** they want.
Oh, also, a tutorial. Give people a tutorial. |
