Aeon Amadi wrote:Let's say you have a car moving from left to right. If you have 15 Frames Per Second, it [the animation] will appear sluggish and chunky. If I have 60 FPS (or more) it will appear more smooth. For the record, the human eye can generally only see movement at 1/60th of a second (60 FPS) so anything higher and the average human eye can't really perceive the difference.
One additional tidbit about that. Under normal situations your brain, which controls how much information is received from your eyes, sets the limit to approximately 60 FPS. However, your brain has a built in emergency system in which it increases the limit to almost double that amount. But this is only when the brain senses or thinks it's in a life-threatening situation.
For example, anyone who has ever jumped off a bridge with a bungee cord attached to their feet or jumped off a plane with a parachute for the first time will think that time is slowing down when looking at a watch on the way down. This is because the brain is processing information at a much higher rate than normal in an attempt to assess the situation and help it react to the situation at hand much sooner. The same goes when you're in a forest surrounded by fire and your brain immediately switches to overdrive to try to get you out of there as fast as possible.
However, this doesn't work in a video game setting where your brain knows you're not in any real danger at all. Therefore your brain caps out at around 60 FPS. Any more than that and things will just appear smoother rather than slow down time and therefore your reaction time will likely not be enhanced under this situation... unless you can somehow constantly trick your brain into thinking that playing a video game IS a life-threatening situation.

Well duh, but it's a metaphorical comparison to the limitation that our eye/brain can perceive the flow of visual information.

Just to touch on what Aeon Amadi said above - I know in film they sometimes use lower framerates to give that feeling of a certain engineered style to the film. I believe 24~ FPS gets used a lot, or at least used to.
In gaming reality though, a base 30 FPS should be considered a minimum for fast pace games like FPS`s. Most people are very happy with 60FPS. Some will want more.
As long as it never drops below 30 FPS, you are not at any sort of disadvantage I would say. Unlike in DUST 514 currently, on the PS3, where in PC battles people can have varying levels of frame rate. Personally I have had it many times go as low as single digit frame rates. At this point, it looks like you are just clicking through still images - that's the best way I can describe low frame rate for the OP.
TLDR - Capping frame rate should only ever be an option for the user to select if they really want to. CCP should in no way restrict possible frame rates unless there is very good reason to. |

Thank you all for the info, it sounds like PC has some very exciting capabilities. I am eager to give PC a try, but will need to do some saving. Good thing LEGION releases in a couple of years, can't wait to see it. |

I'm kinda glad you posted that. I started off laughing and rolling through the thread, but after reading through the explanations and linked information -- I learned something.
+1 for free knowledge.
I support legion. - it's more of a theoretical support. Depending on the feedback I get, it may become actual support.

Best part is that PC is -not- as expensive as most people let on and with the money you'd spend on a PS4 you can pretty much build your own PC that is of equal or better performance. Not exactly, though, because the PS4's hardware is (surprisingly enough) mostly designed for the mobile market so it's got some surprising kick to it for the price.
It's always cheaper to build your own PC and generally safer so you know what you're getting but since Legion is a mandatory Direct X 11 game (confirmed by Devs) that's a good starting point. Based on a quick search on Newegg (place I go for all my hardware) you can get a cheap DX11-compatible video card for $30 though I HIGHLY recommend against it because you probably would be able to run the game at only it's lowest graphical settings, lol.
A good rule I've always lived by is if you set a $100 budget on each main part (mother board, processor, video card) you'll be fine.

Iv heard rumours that the brain can be trained to clock up. Would not be supprised of "pro" gamers have learned how to do this, even if they dont realise it :-D. Would make an intresting study :-P

I would suggest studying top level / Korean Pro Starcraft 2 players then because both their speed and tactical decision making are just ridiculously fast. |
