Several times it's been suggested that assets should be delivered by player flown RDVs.
The down side has been:
- that a player's expensive vehicle / installation is put at the mercy of another player
- that "tank bombing" would become an OP tactic
But the benefit would be:
- More player involvement
- New profession
- Broader range of tactics
- Elimination of the NPC logic that has faired poorly in the current RDV system
I'd like to see a system where:
- RDVs are generic transports
- - - Bringing in whole squads at the beginning of and during the battle (assembled on the MCC) - - - Bringing in manned vehicles from the MCC at the beginning of and during the battle (Crew gets in the tank, tank is transported by the RDV, tank deploys with crew in-place) - - - Persisting on the battlefield after the drop off so they can carry out further transport roles during the game -- say rapid re-deployment of tanks or moving them to "high ground" (of course that would only work if there was no red line )
- RDVs become visible at an altitude that allows ground troops to attack them as they descend
- the owner of transported items does not suffer financially if the RDV pilot screws up. But poor performance of the pilot means the cargo is delivered slowly or not at all.
- RDV pilots are rewarded for items / mercenaries transported and the efficiency of the transport
- RDV pilots are punished if they fail at transport
- an alternative -- say a beefed up version of a CRU - A Vehicle Deployment Unit -- could be used if players don't want to trust their gear to a player pilot (but at the price of less flexibility in deployment)
It is but to keep the nerves at strain, to dry one's eyes and laugh at a fall, and baffled, get up and begin again.

No offense, but driving a delivery truck doesn't sound fun to me. |

Some folks, though, do like to fly them and if the rewards were better would do it more. What's more, piloting RDVs -- harder to shoot down, more stable platform, serving a useful role, making some ISK / SP in the process -- would be a way for people to ease into piloting without having to hide in corners to practice or (in a different setup) fly in a practice area with little or no involvement in the core game.
That's all to say I believe more options that make a difference are better than less.

I love flying transport craft. It's a great way to help the team, although it doesn't make any money right now. I run a Myron with a cru and a scanner, so I can support my team, and provide a safe spawn on the front lines.

simple balancing is you pay for the RDV if you crash it and you pay for the vehicle if you lose it on delivery. UI like Judge Radamanthus's video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KWUmID56Gw&index=9&list=PLE03F8kPr_F_wrgd9bl_bTpqNU9Q_SKys would help both RDV pilots and dropship pilots

Legion is a sandbox FPS so your suggestion makes alot of sense and should IMO be implemented.
My only point of concern making sure it doesn't overlap with the dropship role. Let it be able to bring in a limited amount of infantry or even an entire CRU stocked with a number of clones but don't it allow dismounting mid-air i.e. the RDV must land or something like that.
Also maybe add an escrow tax so if the RDV pilot loses your tank due to bad piloting then you take the cost of the tank out of his wallet. That way RDV pilots will be forced to consider whether or not they can cover a fee and demands them to check the conditions they are flying into.
Otherwise, +1 |

That's the great thing about a sandbox: It appeals to many different players with many different goals, and each of them are given a lot of leeway in how they get to play.
Make it optional, and everybody wins.

Keep it as the drone variant, but allow mercs to control the drone when it's flying in.
Also, people like that kind of thing anyways, so have both the T I and T II versions?

Not a cargo hauler, but the occasional bomb/ammo truck driver on covert ops here. I have to agree with you.
I have no idea how CCP could sanely implement player-controlled RDVs, though.
