A dramatization of how some meetings appears to be happening
[Inside CCP HQ]
Hey guys, i-¦ve got an idea!
Let-¦s scrap Dut 514 because it-¦s a big failure. 4k players is not commercially viable, so let-¦s try a fresh approach.
Product we have now? [Points do Dust powerpoint]TRASH[Powerpoint gif of Dust to recycle bin]
Let-¦s scrap EVERYTHING we have and make a whole new game. All the feedback trough the years? Crap. If it were useful, we would have 1m players.
Groudbreaking skill system with full customization, that we emulated poorly from EVE Online and only needed a few tweaks, and even like this is what distincts our product in the market from other games? TRASH. [Powerpoint of skill tree to recycle bin]
We have to try something new, and something right. [Powerpoint of a big stack of green $]
THAT-¦S the public we want. [Point to stereotype of fat kid with a headset on the couch holding a credit card and a mother screaming behind him].
Casual, for fun, money spending younglings that don-¦t know basic math and don-¦t want too mch complexity. Nor too litlle. They don-¦t want to think actually, and we-¦ll provide them just that.
What are the games that make $$ ? Diablo III, WoW, GTA V. Do they have to worry about thinking too much? NO [Powerpoint of a person with a headache]
We have the IP for New Eden, so let-¦s bring a system that works for medieval fantasy, and transport it to a futuristic sci-fi! Its a sure deal, for they definetly don-¦t have futuristic skin packs and weaons to buy in Diablo nor Wow!!! [Powerpoint of borat great success]
Use the mechanics from a different company, to make a whole new game, on a genre that we know little about, using the money from the other game of the franchise, to gather a public that doesn-¦t like or other game while alienating part of the public we already have, in a saturated market, removing our only differential, but all this for PC. Much bigger market than the PS3!!!!
Think bold my friends! How can this go wrong? [Powerpoint of **** yeah!]

Not seeing where staying on PS3 was a good idea, or where moving to PS4, where they'd compete with the likes of Destiny and a fresh release of PS2 would be a good idea either.
I think the PC, with it's far higher tolerance for poor games thanks to the ease of dissemination is a far superior choice for CCP's business model. Especially since it's much more straightforward to program on, it being the platform on which their developers have experience.
But what do I know, I'm just a dumb console gamer...

Moving to PC - Excellent Bigger market , better design tools, pushing things to the limit, it-¦s not only good, it should have been done in the first place.
Improving accessibility - Excellent New players must be nurtured, taken care of, find proper groups and recieve training. Dust UNI it-¦s an excellent example of player helping each other. But it must go beyond that. The new player must have a proper presentation to the game, by the game itself. Players need to have proper explanation of how things work, and a degree of coice on how much they want to insert themselves into, and how much they want to be managed by them.
Removing compelxity - Terrible The key signature, the thing that makes New Eden unique, the reason of being, the market niche, the company trademark, is the tools provided for the player to play on the sandbox. Less tools, = Generic game from any publisher. Removing tools (complex or not) from the hands of the player is terrible beyond speaking. A tool can be automanaged by the game, but removing it entirely in name of "accessbility" is not this, it-¦s dumbing down. Specially when several ways of resolving the skil tree issue were proposed.
I now there wasn-¦t much information released, that they have a pathway already structured, that CPM took a look at it and liked what was shown, so i talk from an ignorant perspective.
By the looks of things so far, i-¦m expecting a "Playermarket" similar to an Auction House from Blizzard, and the "Roles" to be classes that limit item/equipment/playabiity in fixed positions or configurations.

I don't think roles will be restrictive classes. More like 'the scout is good at xxx so should use these weapons a equipment better and should follow this carrer path' as opposed to "can only use this"
They are doing the same thing with valk, where the ships have spacifics jobs. It makes more sense in this aspect then it would in say eve. But i think you will be able to mix and match weapons and equipment, which si what you should be able to do, but that it will be harder to use some things or not as efficent based on the suits role. Like a scout will not use heay weapons as well as a heavy suit would. Or a heavy would have a harder time using light weapons.
Its like trying to put medium guns on a frig. You might be able to squeze one on it, but you are greatly limiting yourself. Just like a smaller gun on a BS, you can fit it, but its not going to work as well.
Thats my take on it. As he never said you would be locked in, just that you cna open up things for this particular role.
I like dust open skill system better, but i'm willing to get more concrete info on legions before i make a judgment call |
