As most know, I'm a big believer in rewarding 'interactive' behaviour over punishing 'play-you-own-way' styles of play.
This came up in the most recent episode of BIOMASSED, where CCP Z's progression outline came up. While it is in it's early' prototype' stage, it's feasible that we as a player-base can have some major input, so I put forward this idea on BIOMASSED, and now on the forums to follow-up for those who may not follow podcasts, or disinclined to listen to them for other reasons.
Within this system, I take an EVE-style SP system interlaced with an ISIS overlay, broken down into subgroups. Sounds complicated, but it's not.
What you do is you build a branch of 'semi-compulsory' skill investments around each individual asset. Then offer synergy bonuses for suits, weapons, and equipment that are tailored to those roles. Thus encouraging certain roles, without making an issue of speccing up an entire new suit tree to get access to your weapon of choice.
As a brief example:
Caldari Sentinel Designed principally around Anti-Vehicle Duties (for the purposes of this example) would have skills that increase it's CPU, PG, Shield HP, Shield Regen, Shield Recharge, etc. It would also have Heavy Damage Modifiers in there to get you the most 'bang for your buck'. but in a way that doesn't mean you MUST spec into Caldari Heavy to get said skill. Instead, there are two trees. One attached to the suit, and one attached to the Damage Modifier.
The Damage Modifier Tree gives a smaller % bonus and the Cadlari Tree 'Synergy Skill' gives the other % of the bonus to bring it up... ONLY to Heavy Damage Modidifers, and ONLY when wearing the Caldari Heavy Suit.
In addition, the Caldari Sentinel Suit would also have a Damage bonus Synergy Skill to Forge guns, or something similar, while a separate branch for the Forge Gun (containing Forge Gun fiting skills, etc.. would have the rest of the % bonus.
This is a formative idea, and one I would like to get the community's input into developing further.
The idea at the core, is you chose a suit, weapon, and equipment / modules to spec into as individual trees, and not spec into a 'role' to attain required modules. But speccing certain ways gives you synergy that increases the effectiveness of the combination beyond what raw skills would get you.
Once you go Black, you just never go back!
