Hey everyone, maybe this thread will make you hate me but I want to share this GÇ£ideaGÇ¥. Probably the fps purists wonGÇÖt like this or will consider this uselessGǪ
First of all I want to say 3 GÇ£importantGÇ¥ things: First: before playing MAG and Dust I played for many years a MMORPG called Guild Wars, GW, a game like WoW but with a better PvP. ItGÇÖs PvP was incredible!!! That is maybe a useless information but GWGÇÖs PvP is were I take my ideas from. Second: IGÇÖm Italian, I suck at English. I will try to make it as clear as possible but you will find hundreds of mistakes, IGÇÖm sorry. The third thing is that I know a lot of good players, that follow the orders and the team and are very good at movements and strategy, but with a terrible gun gameGǪ
In Dust these players have two possibilities: 1 be a logibro maybe repairing heavies and spamming equipments (this doesnGÇÖt mean that every logibro has a bad gungame) 2 they can suck and just be bad! In Dust you can shoot or repair while in a gunfight. IGÇÖd like this to change in Legion; IGÇÖd like to see various role in the battlefield.
When I say roles IGÇÖm not talking about Logi, assault, heavy, scouts IGÇÖm talking about the roles you have in a mmorpg team.
LetGÇÖs analyze them in a normal mmorpg and how they could work in Legion.
In a mmorpg the most common roles are: Tank, Glass cannon/dps/DD(damage dealer)call him the way you want, buffer/debuffer, healer. I will explain them a bit for the ones of you that donGÇÖt know them: TANK: high amount of hp or resistance (usally both)his job is to stay in the frontline and try to absorb as many damages as possible. His power is his ability to be damaged without dying. In pve he usually has some skill to force bots to attack him. Glass cannon/dps/DD: look at his names. High damage per second but with a little amount of hp, he usally try to stay in the second line, protected by the tank. His role is simple: KILL! Buffer/Debuffer: usally they are not the same person. The buffer buff his team increasing dmg or hp or hp regen or mana regen or speed or whatever. It is also called Support. The debuffer tries toGǪehmGǪdebuff the other team slowing them down or interrupting their skills or whatever he can do. Healer: heals his team and protecst his mates. He is usally in the third line and has to keep the team alive.
Now what does this have to do with Legion? How could we add this roles in Legion? This is the next step, I want to show you that these roles already exists in Dust even if they could be implemented in a better way and made stronger, deeper and more different from one to each other. I hope that IGÇÖll also be able to show you how this could add a lot of variations in the battlefield and in the skill tree; a lot of difference between how two players play the same role.
TANK LetGÇÖs start with him. This is quite easy because we already have this in Dust. Take a Sentinel, especially the Gallente I think, and you have a perfect tanker. But with the addition of some modules, some equipments and some variants in the skill tree we could make this role a bit deeper.
MODULES: Damage Controls: this is an easy example. We can add a lot of variants: active or passive, against every kind of damage or just against one. Projectile drawer: This could look like a stupid idea and probably it is. The idea is a module that draw to the tanker the projectiles that would have missed him in an area around him. GÇ£R U F*KING STUPID?GÇ¥ yes, I know this is a terrible idea but it is perfect for the role of the tanker, he has to protect his teammates so to draw those projectile that would have missed him and maybe would have hit the healer is the job of the tanker. To balance this module we can add that it gives to the tanker a lot of resistance against damage. You canGÇÖt miss him but itGÇÖs very hard to kill him or his friends.
EQUIPMENTS: GÇ£but sentinels donGÇÖt have equipments you idiotGǪGÇ¥ YES! EXACTLY! Here we are with all the different possibilities. Bubble shield: Placeable equipment, all units inside Bubble will not take or deal damage Juggernaut: it is explained in this post Portable shield you can see it in this video at 0:38 Dragon's teeth: deployable equipment, bollard is constructed that restricts enemy movement. It helps the tanker to protect friends behind him.
So we can have another kind of tanker that use his equipments to tank enemies dmg.
You could add to the skill tree sentinels with a lot of hp or with a lot of resistances or with bonus at using a particular type of module or maybe a sentinel with an equipment to let him use these equipments. But you can also add a logi specialized in these equipments or one with more hp or more resistances.
DPS This already exists in Dust and everyone can do this in very different ways. We have slow Sentinels with high dpsGÇÖs hmg, commando with 2 high dpsGÇÖs light weapon, scouts with shotguns for high alpha in cqc, etc. This role is a bit weaker now that damage mod are weak but with them being balanced we could have this role in Legion. I would only add some modules for the love of variants:
MODULES: ROF Enhancer. Optimal/Falloff range modifier. Clip size Enlarger Obviously it is quite easy to add variants in the skill tree for this role, we already have a lot of them.

I can't tell what's worse about your posts: how they're structured or the ideas found within.
Edit: Definitely the ideas.

I think people aren't going to like these ideas because what your proposing cuts into the customizability aspect which is one of Dust514 (and presumably Legion's) far too much. As Dust exists now, you can play these roles you have listed. You can also create your own roles or tailor your fittings to the unique situation you find yourself in when in the actual fight.
Each suit has advantages and disadvantages (cost, base stats, and bonuses), as does each weapon/module. Finding a synergy between suit, fitting, and personal play style, is a large part of what makes Dust fun (and by extension, legion).

One good logi, one rep tool, and a heavy.

This sounds like what CCP is going for in Legion... I'd say we should keep everything the same and add all of the new equipment you suggested. Bubble shield, biotic buff injection, target painter...sounds good!

While the idea might sound nice, it doesn't sound like DUST. You'd need a game mechanic overhaul for any of it to make sense, and the current mechanics regarding dropsuits are -fine-.
Unlike EVE, DUST is fluid. You MUST have the flexibility that traditional RPG styles like this just won't give you. |

Extreme take on the subject:
The flexibility of the suits and fits we have at the moment is what creates the "best build" flavour-of-the-month mentality. Wanting to play a dropsuit that can do everything (dish out damage and survive 1 on 1s on their own regardless of situation) is badwrongfun and hurts the game as a whole even though it might boost your K/D score.
Limiting flexibility is the only way to get the paper-rock-scissors gameplay effect (everyone is a counter to something and is counterable by something). This gameplay forces teamplay and is A Good Thing (tm).
I don't know if the statement above is true since I can't think of a FPS on the market that has the MMO tank/dps/healer trinity as a model, but it's something the devs need to relate to as they decide on what they want legion to be. |
