Local chat is such a crutch in Eve in my opinion and I am hoping not to see it in Legion. If you want a Local chat as just a chat tool fine but no free pass to know who is there please. |

Nice try. You just want to carebear it up and shoot rocks on the ground. I'll burn your mining tank first.

not if legion took the freeroam / planetside2 approach where we travel to different districts or planetary sectors.

I say make it so that you won't appear on local chat unless you post something on the channel. Delayed chat mode basically. But then again, why not make it like Eve high-sec local chat? If you're in the system and there are 5 planets and each planet has like 4-5 districts, I doubt it would matter if you can see someone in local.

For private and corp channels currently if I recall correctly for Dust. But again, this is Legion we're talking here.

That is wormhole space in Eve. Every other instance in Eve has an intel channel so as soon as your enter it you know how many and who is there. There is no challenge at all in scouting. |

Just to say a few things on this subject as I do support text chat - mainly because I want to help people co-ordinate, help noobs possibly or even call out priority targets. (A commander mode would be even better).
Lets be clear, not everyone will be in the same corp or on comms.
I do not want this 'chat' to become an intel tool like local is in EVE.
The problem is the scoreboard will always show what's going on anyway right? (forget the ps3 button but its the tab button on keyboard usually)
I think this kind of thing is where we can help influence the design going forward and I am glad people are posting their opinions even if I dont agree. The community is all of us, not just whoever has the most threads or likes.
Just to add - I am still a little confused how the sandbox part will work. Will each location / planet be an instance that players join into (like systems are in EVE?) |

Yeah I thought about the scoreboard too. I wish that was only at the end of the match. That is prolly good for another post hehe. |

Would seem likely. But it will likely be a very open-type instance in which anything you do in one instance will invariably affect nearby instances. For example, if you attack a key material harvesting facility in one district (instance), it will mean less materials available for the nearby instances to work with. Think of Jita and Perimeter being affected by the market that's going on in the Jita system.
Instances that are exceedingly far away from each other can also affect each other. Think of how the Jita and Amarr star systems (one in The Forge region and other in the Domain region respectively) affect each other via the market and that certain systems along the trade route such as Niarja and Uedama are used by high-sec suicide gankers to catch unsuspecting haulers with phat lewts by surprise.
Balle is another common gank system when it comes to catching high-sec haulers that are on their way to Dodixie. I was in a gank group one time where I was in a cloaked blockade runner while two other players in a Tornado and a scout ship. We spotted a hauler one jump out coming in with over 800 million ISK worth of Datacores. The Tornado got into position, ganked the hauler upon jumping in, her Tornado got Concorded but the target's loot dropped after getting alphed by the nado while I came in with my blockade runner and then snatched the loot then warped to station immediately. Text-book gank was successful. Unfortunately, since the loot drop is chance based, only 220 million of the 800 million ISK worth of datacores dropped in the loot but we still earned enough to pay for the Tornado with more then enough left over to give everyone 55 million ISK each as part of their share.
Oh I'm sorry. I got caught up in the moment.

In the open world portion of Dust, seeing merc names in the local system channel could be entirely useless from an intelligence perspective. On a sense of scale it could be the same as knowing that an eve pilot is somewhere in a constellation, it just wouldn't help you.

I can agree that local should be delayed though I also am of the opinion that there should be a District upgrade that allows for Local to serve as an "intel tool"

Probably not at the moment. I'm still of the opinion that local chat in Legion should be delayed chat or just regular chat like Eve since it won't affect the local Legionaries who have to scout through multiple planets in one system and each planet has multiple districts. This is completely different than how it affects Eve players.

Free intel on knowing who is in a system is not a good thing ever in my opinion. |

Free intel is useless if you don't know where the player is at in that system and you're unable to find him. I would understand what you mean if this was Eve since there are already tools in place to find a player, but this is not Eve. This is Legion.
But even if local chat was set to delayed mode where you don't show up at all unless you say anything at all in local, it will only be a slight inconvenience to the scouts if CCP ever goes ahead and allow Legionaries to gain access to Locator Agents.

I appreciate everyone opinions here. It might be easier than you think if districts are owned by Corporations as far as not being able to find them might. There are so many things we do not know yet about Legion yet and this is on my mind because it is one thing I do not like about Eve. It might all be for nothing. Guess time will tell. |

As a lowly miner that's still skilling for a hurricane ship, I can confirm that miners are harvesting more than pirates can gangk.
In my region in eve, Tritanium was at 4.65 isk per unit on the market. Within just a month it has gone up to 6.90 and that was 5 days ago.
We are ruining the economy in that region for our own gain and we don't give a fk. The ratings are going up for all resources in my region and this is happening slowly everywhere. I can safely speculate with rather large differences between each bet and know that I will get paid.
When I get enough isk, other than combat I'll be setup in stations with a collection of evil bastards across regions literally farming the market and making it worse until I have so much isk that I can spam whatever I want for a good long time.
Rinse and repeat.
And that's just little old me.
Local is essential for Intel and trolling with a pinch of decent discussion.
I will spam your face with aurum proto.
