Hello everyone.
I'd like to share why I was attracted to Dust 514 in the first place and why I'm sceptical about Legion now. This is mostly feedback for CCP's designers but feel free to (Decard Cain voice now:) "stay a while and listen".
Let's start with the aspects that I like/liked in Dust514:
- I consider myself casual video gamer. I like complex and involved games but I don't like to emotionally invest in them. Dust definitely is complex, but since its framework is a basic lobby-shooter you don't have to care about it a whole lot if you don't want to.
- I like short-term matches that have a defined start and end. I think it's about a constant sense of in-game progress.
- I enjoy multiplayer games with teamwork but I don't keep friendslists. Blueberry-herding was one of my favorite past-times in Dust.
- I like persistent progress in a shooter but I don't care about owning stuff (in-game assets of any kind, items or planets, stations, etc.). Gladly I was never short on ISK in Dust so the number of assets I owned was always irrelevant to me.
- I like the atmosphere of being in a vivid universe, but I don't care to interact with it. Amarr lasers are awesome, but I couldn't care less about some spaceship falling on some planet.
- I enjoy having to try hard but I don't care (much) about the result. A 1.0 k/d is alright if you do it in full MLT against professionals. I like being able to give myself a handicap.
Now you may have an impression of me as a gamer and you can probably see why I was attracted to Dust 514. One of the biggest pulls for me was when sometime in 2012 I saw a guy from CCP say that (paraphrased) "Eve online is (maybe unfortunately) the angry kid's way of playing in the Eve universe. Dust 514 is for those that want more face-shooting rather than spreadsheets." This vision was what made me accept Dust's deficiencies up until this point.
With my personal vision of Dust established I can now elaborate on why I'm sceptical about Legion:
- Legion is tightly integrated into Eve's economy. When I played Eve online any interaction with the economy was a complete drain on my experience. Why do you have to waste 10 minutes to sell all the loot you found? How does looking at market charts improve gameplay?
- Legion has new and improved leaderboard mechanics. I'm not a tryhard.
- Legion allows mercs to capture and lay ownership to districts in a much more meaningful way. I want less asset management and more face-shooting.
- Legion is about building a sand castle and caring about it. This is pretty much the anti-thesis to what I was looking for in Dust 514.
I don't know a lot about how Legion is different from Dust, but the few that I know about the vision behind it makes me cautious.
Thanks for reading. Even if I'm unlikely to stick with Legion, consider this my part in helping CCP's designers understand why at least some Dust 514 players feel alienated by Legion.
Any feedback on things that aren't clear is welcome. |
