I will begin firstly to say that I am a 20 mil SP vet. Today I created a brand new account, a newbie account in order to see what it is like to be a newbie again, to be on the receiving end.
I was surprised. For New Players, new players go through an extremely short training program, so short, in fact, that it lasted only one battle. To top it off everything is so largely confusing. Instead of BIG, FAT arrows pointing where to click and what to do in one's Merc Quarters, there was only a subtle reminder in the bottom left corner, "Make your first working fitting" or something of the sort.
At least for me, that one battle, however, was the most enjoyable experience I've EVER had in all of my time playing DUST, and here's simply why:
- Everyone was on a fair playing field (except for me and one guy on the enemy team, he clearly knew what the heck he was doing) and even still it was by far THE MOST BALANCED GAME I've EVER played in my life.
- Time to kill was exceptionally short and brief. Since eHP levels were all relatively low (and no one thought of using militia heavy frames or tanks, how genius) it actually required teamwork to get past a well fortified point. Which of course often did not happen because the blueberries just didn't get the clue--and I didn't expect them to. I was a vet, they were newbies.
- I actually could feel like a bad*** for once in my life, running around the map that I know like the back of my hand, sneaking up and eradicating enemies with skill and precision. Sure, I died a few times but hey, things happen.
This brings me back--the Beta days were my favorite. Everything was practically all sniper fire or straight up assault. In between you'd see little medics scurrying back and forth with a submachine gun and a nanite injector, and that was that. People actually PTFO, and there was not a single sight of tanks or any such. Well, there were one or two but most could be taken care of by infantry.
The only thing I disliked was that tanks WERE a bit too squishy--a single person armed with AV grenades could eradicate the owners of the tank within seconds, and a nanohive, perhaps.
Everyone knows a single bazooka should not be able to blow a tank up, unless, of course, it is a light tank.
Thoughts? What do you miss about Beta days you Beta players? As for new players what are yours? |

Thank you, Comrade Jenza Aranda.
Personally however I don't really like the PVE system, unless one can train the newbies how to fight in them.

In a game like this you need a full fledged tutorial.
You know something 'story driven' like the road you take to becoming an immortal mercenary. They don't just let anyome become a Duster.
We are talking Training Exercises, Simple PvE Scenarios, PvE matches with drones on both sides.
1) Movement Tutorial 2) Weapon Tutorial 3) Equipment Tutorial
4) (Optional) Advanced Tactics Tutorial 5) PvE Match
6) Ground Vehicle Tutorial 7) Air Vehicle Tutorial 8) (Optional) OMS/Fixed Turret Tutorial
9) Fitting Tutorial 10) Marketplace Tutorial
11) PvE Matches - Become Immortal Mercenary here
12) Accademy PvP Matches - Recieve Battlefield Clearance here
Looks like its back to FPS Military Shooter 56

only lasted one battle cause you know how to play the game. 1200 war points gets you kicked out of academy. so obviously most of them are not earning that much |

But yeah, to the OP, I too started an alt to use until the servers close and the battle academy was crazy fun. You stay in battle academy depending on how much WP you accumulate (I think) so if you take your time and try not to stomp the new players you can last 2 or 3 games in BA. Personally, I think this is better because new players don't want to see some uber-player wiping the floor with them on their first game.
Now, getting out of Academy, that was pretty hard. Everyone's trying to get rid of their isk and expensive weapons so there's more proto stomping in force. Having less than 700,000 sp, It's frustrating playing a game knowing you can't really sway the direction of the battlefield until you have around 3 million. That being said, an alt is incredibly fun because you know you suck, so who cares about kd/r. I've been trying out sniping, and murder taxing, infiltration and hacking etc instead of frontline fighting. It's not like I contribute much to the battlefield with such a new character anyways, I might as well have fun doing nothing.
open beta: I miss the huge mountain with 20 snipers on it. You know, the mountain that took up like most of the left side of the map? yeah... that one.
Thale groupie (not the gun, but the man).
