I think I'll call this episode "Forum Warrioring 101" What do you think? Lol, well I'm being about half troll here. There really is ALOT of players that follow these steps. Every update we get that touches on weapons is followed with forums being flooded and many many support tickets put in. for some reason, CCP just keeps giving out respecs. They should just sell them. Anyway, I've watched your videos and appreciate all the effort your putting forth to help newbies. Most vets have gone through the dance of teaching friends and other players how to play and most just don't care anymore. I'm just as guilty. Regardless of being a dieing game, it will still be around for some time and I will try in the future to send new guys to your vids. +1 |

Just an update on the series progress. I'm currently running behind schedule as I work feedback into my upcoming videos. This means i'm reworking content, recording new audio, recording new footage and doing significant editing of the final videos. Thanks for being patient with me. I expect to have my next three videos published within two weeks, perhaps sooner.

Great series! It's a good supplement to your fantastic Learning Squads. Already changed a lot in my way of playing (less aggressive and dying a little less because of it). Please continue -¦cause I'm following every step!!! Gambate & see you in dusty New Eden...

Hey guys!
Just an update on the series progress.
Good News: I've got episode 4 and 5 recorded and most of the editing done,
Bad News: All the recording and rendering finally pushed my 2007 laptop off the deep end. So I'm without hardware at the moment and I'll be out in the field for a military training exercise for the next two weeks.
Extra Good News: I should have a new computer within the next couple of weeks, and in the meantime I'm trying to use a friends computer to finish editing and publish some videos.
Thanks for all your support!

So for AV, I'm looking for someone to record my corp mate and I doing AV effectively. Would you be interested? Had two people pop up but I want to make sure that I have plenty of resources to tap. And getting more than one person to record and comment is very helpful.

alten hilt wrote:I've spent the last month recording gameplay footage for a Dust 514 tutorial series called "Surviving Dust". I've planned out the structure, written most of the scripts, and built a lot of art assets; I've just been waiting for some decent audio equipment before doing any serious editing of the footage. My audio equipment arrives tomorrow, but the question I have now is "Is there any demand for a tutorial series aimed at helping new players?" I would love to get some community feedback in order to gauge player interest. If you could answer the following questions in your response I would greatly appreciate it.
- Are you a new player?
- If yes, are you interested in 5-10 minute tutorial videos? What topics are you most interested in?
- If no, have you recently squaded with a new player who you think would benefit from 5-10 minute tutorials? What topics do you think would benefit these players the most.
Thanks in advance for your feedback. I'll upload the series outline later today once I get back home.

I'd be more than happy to help record footage. However, I likely won't be able to help until I'm out of the field (23 June). Also, I can think of a couple of details we would need to work out (like how to get you the footage, etc) but we can coordinate by email. My gamer email should be visible on my YouTube channel.

Hey Everybody!
I'm back from my military training, exhausted, but ready to start producing videos again, and I have a nice shiny new computer waiting to be built!
I'm still absorbing all the changes from hotfix Alpha and Bravo, so in the meantime, I'll probably produce some strategy videos using the new starter fits (seriously, how long have we been asking for racial starter fits and militia weapons!!! Way to go DUST 514 team!)

I think you need to emphasize unlearning a lot of tactics. Moving is your friend in this game, if someone is shooting at you keep moving and fire right back if sprinting to a better position isn't an option. If I had a nickel for every newberry I see come creeping around a corner crouched with an AR in hand.
If players have played halo before tell them the gun play is pretty much copy pasted from that. This game is a seniority based rpg shooter and you are the new guy. You aren't going to win many 1 on 1 firefights so try to ball up with your team. That said know when to quit as well because if you are going 0/16 you are hurting more than potentially helping. If they haven't played Halo then just tell them to never stop maneuvering. If they are going to ADS, tell them to ADS behind objects but don't ADS a target that is staring you down with more ehp.
Also, use the damn swarm launcher you are handed in the frontline fits when getting harassed by vehicles. You won't do a lot of damage but it will do more then you shooting your rifle at the tank/dropship. You would be suprised how many vehicles narrowly escape death and av players could of used a little more dps on their side.
Never snipe from the same position as other snipers and don't snipe if your team doesn't have a progressive battle line. You aren't going to help push the line if you're losing ground.
Last but not least play around with building militia suits before you ever start skilling into things. Militia gear though crappy is still accurate enough to give you an idea of what you would like to use in the future.
Just a few things I can think of off the top of my head that I see your average newberry doing that needs to ******* stop doing that. |

Ideally learn to use the militia forge or PLC as they have better burst damage then the low level swarm launcher but this will require the player to make the fitting themselves.

Learning Dust EP 11: Support Roles-Ewar
Today's episode looks at a more advanced support role that is likely beyond the skill points of a new player. Ewar is a powerful role that can greatly enhance the combat capabilities of your squadmates.

Really excellent series.
You should make a 15 minute video that compresses/summarizes a lot of the detail in the series for the impatient first-time player. You can point them to your other videos as a reference for players who want the depth. Assume they've already made a character and have some experience with FPS games, but don't understand what's what (e.g. What is a CRU, Mobile Depot, nanohives, repair tool, active scanner, remote repairer, needles, armor vs. shields etc.). Try to move quickly through the material and let them know they can learn more in your other clips.
Stress getting in a squad. Do a simple overview of how to join a chat channel, and give them the name of a good one for new players. Briefly show how to join a squad using the squad finder. Quickly show how to get your mic going in squad. Explain how to make a militia starter fit by quickly showing the market. Maybe make your favorite 0 SP militia fit that any race can use as an example. Show them how to make a copy of the fit and then swap out the gun. Encourage them to do this for all militia weapon variants. Highlight some of the best bang/buck SP choices for the new player like armor/shields, electronics/engineering, and getting their favorite racial rifle to Advanced. Briefly explain the economy and how each death uses up one fitting unless revived. Explain that WPs effect end of match payout. Give a couple of quick/easy tips to increase WPs that the new player can take advantage of.
Summarize the suit sizes and racial types. Basically try to make a video for the player who isn't sure they will like DUST, they skipped all of the text and don't understand much, and will only commit 15 minutes to a tutorial vid. What can you squeeze into it to give them the best chance of success? If they like your suggestions, and do well, then they're more likely to become invested enough to watch the rest of your videos.
On a separate note, I'd really enjoy seeing a video (possibly a separate series) on how to be an effective squad leader. Things like squad compositions, communication style, what is important to communicate vs. just noise, team tactics and strategy, dealing with enemy vehicles with squad tactics, squad strategies for the various game modes etc.
Best PvE idea ever!

Will do! This is an excellent idea and I'm not sure why I haven't thought of it earlier. Thanks for the idea, 15 Mil ISK to you next time I log in.
My play time/free-time lately has been very limited, so I've been doing easy-to-produce videos (which still take 2+ hours to produce). One of the main reasons I've procrastinated finishing my tutorial series is that each episode required over 10 hours to produce. I've upgraded my hardware and software since then so I'm guessing I can cut that time down to 5 hours.
Only having 30 minutes a day to work on videos sucks!
