DUST might not have much of a future, but it's far from dead.
Since progress carries over to Legion, this won't ever happen. A respec should be 100% reasonable though, considering any transfer to Legion would have to logically un-allocate your SP anyways.

Funny, I remember lots of things being "confirmed" about Dust a year or two ago as well... Even IF they are sincere in their desire to have your progress carry over, it is too early in Legion's development cycle to make such a promise, which is why, if read CCP's posts on the subject, you'll notice that they haven't actually "confirmed" anything of the sort. They've only said they will "try" to have your progress carry over, which is just the safe, marketing thing to say in this situation, to keep you around and interested in their new shiny.
They know that if they don't transfer from DUST to Legion they will lose the support they have for it. SP is only a number. What they haven't confirmed yet is whether or not Legion has the Green Light to go into full time development.
Most of the people who "confirmed" the pie in the sky features for DUST have long since been fired, and for good reason.
I choose to look forward to the future. It doesn't cost me a dime, and it doesn't drown me in negativity, so it's basically a win win for me.

Legion is only in the prototype stage, which is why they haven't CONFIRMED anything yet, but have only said that they will see what they can do.
Throwing around the word "confirmed" on the forums, when no such confirmation yet exists, is simply spreading false information.
I don't have the link, but in the round table and on multiple places on the forums, blues have confirmed that progress will transfer.
You're right though, it's a long time from now till then, so we can only see. I was 100% ready to walk away from DUST for good before they announced Legion though, so for me, I have nothing to lose. Legion is what's keeping me here now.

I don't know off hand when he says that character progress will transfer, but it's somewhere towards the beginning I think.

It doesn't cost me anything, so either I can act like a rabid conspiracy theorist, or I can just enjoy the vision and see where it takes me.
I see no sense and getting bent out of shape over the prospect of a better game, but everyone has their reasons.

I wasn't backstabbed.
My progress carries over, AND I get to play the game that was originally pitched to me. It's quite the opposite of a backstab in my case. And most of you will likely get a quality PS4 port out of it.
The rest of you who expected this to be a PS3 game till the end of time, well, not sure what to tell you other than the game is still being developed and won't be closed until everyone just stops playing it.

What happens when they tell you your progress can't carry over? You do realize they are saying this to have you spend money on Aurum. All of a sudden due to outrage your progress can be carried over lol.
I'll cross that bridge when I come to it, if it comes to that. Right now, no evidence exists to support that claim outside of emotional conjecture. As I've said, it costs me nothing. CCP isn't getting a dime from me in DUST or Legion (and I actually have money again, finally, woooo) until I see tangible progress in Legion, aka, until I'm playing it and it's actually good.
No sense foaming at the mouth over conjecture, just makes people look like children.

I have not, and will not defend how CCP went about the reveal. I've actually been quite outspoken about how pathetically terrible it was.
As for my name, I actually think I will enjoy having the nostalgia. It will serve as a constant reminder as to where I came from in New Eden.

If any of you bothered to listen to anything at all, you'd know that they plan to separate new players from vets with the new NPE through PvE zones.
So, you could have 24 million vets with 144 hundred trillion SP, and it wouldn't effect new players, at all, period.
