Greetings,
Tebu Gan here to share with you my thoughts of my time here with the the game, community, and the future. I myself have followed this game from the start, watching it grow from it's infancy into what it is now. I think we can safely say it's been quite the ride. ( warning: This is going to be long winded)
I remember stumbling upon Dust 514 as I was looking for my next game. I'm very specific when it comes to games I like. Mainly though, I'm looking for something I can continue to play for months or years to come. I had played EVE once upon a time (2005), but WoW was the thing for me at that time. Plus, EVE was incredibly hard to get into, NPE was much like Dust 514. But as I was considering entering the EVE universe once more, I took notice of this other game, Dust 514.
EVE, is amazing. I wouldn't go as far as saying I personally like it, but I recognize a great game when I see one. Add to this you have managed to stay very successful, while staying somewhat under the radar to bigger titles (Like world of warcraft). I don't just get attached to the game, but the company associated with them. Blizzard USED to be a huge favorite of mine, but that has long since faded. What I'm saying here, CCP, you sucked me in not only to the game, but to the company itself.
So getting back on point, closed beta is going on, and I read every scrap I can about Dust 514. I was VERY excited about this game. Even started myself an EVE account to fully utilize that connection. Time goes on, and then finally it was here, open beta. Now I'm not one to generally mess with beta games, but I simply HAD to check this one out. Best of all, it was on the PS3! My Favorite console!
Things were certainly different back then. Skills were VERY confusing, so many items to go through, just so much. My first thoughts were, "this is like nothing I've played before". It was exciting. I love complexity in video games, and this one certainly had it. First things first, bought a merc pack to show my immediate support, $20. Next, Played a few games, died to lazers from halfway across the map.
I messed around a little more but never really got into it all. With the buggy console not letting me sign in and other glitches, I just gave up. I knew from EVE that SP was important, so focused on passively collecting it while I waited on an official release. That fateful day finally came in May, and boy was I excited to download this thing. I had just got my first retriever in EVE, and was all about funding my merc to give him a little boost.
We all know this didn't happen. But I was excited nonetheless and proceeded to spend quite a bit of money on merc packs for the boosters and BPO's, and the AUR weapons. I very much loved Dust back then. Sometime in July, I sucked it up and started a new char with intent to focus on one particular role. I was learning fast you either proto or go home.
Exit Teba Gan, and enter Tebu Gan my tanker main. And boy was it ROUGH. Tanks weren't exactly "balanced" the way they are now. They were incredibly expensive, required a large SP investment to mitigate that cost, and easily destroyed. Add to that payouts that never came close to matching even the cheapest of my tanks or the fact I used the weakest of the two. So I used Aurum to supplement my tanking habit until I had the SP and skills to make them profitable.
I'm glad to say that because of this, I'm up there with the top tankers in the game. I may not shine every day, but when I'm on my game, gtfo! Tanking though led me to the community, or I should say the forums, and my new hobby of providing feedback. I've been a gamer ever since I was a very young kid, starting out with a old DOS PC with but a few megabytes of memory. So talking games is something I know VERY well.
And you really sucked me in with the idea that I could help make a difference. And whether or not it made any difference, I still loved every second of it. I loved conveying my thoughts and idea's with others and thinking critically about my gameplay and balance issues. It's always been a dream of mine to maybe one day create a game of my own, so it's always good practice in any case. Thanks for giving me that opportunity CCP.
As we look to the future, I can tell you that Dust 514, as I knew it, is DEAD. But I certainly didn't expect it to die like this. It was very confusing watching the Keynote for Dust 514, as it wasn't a Dust 514 keynote. I fully understand that bringing it to the PC is a needed change, but how MUCH LONGER WILL I HAVE TO WAIT, to get the game I was promised all that time ago?
You mention how you can't fix an airplane in flight, it must first be brought down. How is this not bringing the plane down? While Dust will still be online, your announcement meant just that, the plane has landed for maintenance. Green light Legion already and move on.
But don't leave the people that have supported you behind. I've devoted too much time to this game to simply watch it fade away, to be given to some EVE jockey in a fancy ship. This is our game, the Dust bunnies. Pilots may own the space, but by god we own the planets.
With love!
Tebu
