I want to open this by saying this idea is something extra on top of character & asset transfers, not in place of.
It would be really neat if transferred DUST 514 characters started off in their own starter corp & defaulted to a different NPC corp, something set up for immortal mercs. Arkombine is perfect for this. To my knowledge, they aren't established in EVE, they were made for DUST and, really, they fit the mold for the forum-goers these past few days. I mean, 'a splinter group of disillusioned clone soldiers'? If they want to participate in FW, they'd still have to actively join one of the militias or a player corp. Then there wouldn't be a bonus for being in an NPC corp that isn't aligned with the empires.
On top of that, we would get unique dropsuits. Only unique skins, of course. Other than that they're just starter dropsuits. No significant bonus, just a nice little nod. Maybe they'd have the NPC corp's logo, or perhaps they'd have an old DUST logo?
Perhaps even we could have slightly different visuals? Like, maybe we'd see a slightly different death animation. If they change up what we see when we die, then DUST characters would still see the old death. Or a returning thought would be seeing "514" in red during death or perhaps jumping? Maybe our mercs are older ones, and we still have traces of some of the old Sleeper tech. Nothing major, just a few leftovers, and a neat little nod to us.
As for how all these tie together, perhaps DUST is using Sleeper tech, or just getting off of it, and the mercs were all tightly controlled by different groups - the empires, mercenary companies, whatever. As new tech came about (Legionnaire tech?), the groups started to realize that mercs with traces to unstable tech were liabilities more than assets, and started to lock down their clones, trying to truly kill them. Some mercs caught on and ran off, quickly grouping up and getting the newer tech. There's no significant difference, they aren't better or worse in any way, but they are a little different. This would also help explain the changes coming in gameplay while also helping explain why DUST characters would start off with more SP & ISK. They are experienced as immortal mercs, after all!
It also opens up some interesting lore & roleplaying possibilities. The Arkombine are cast in a slightly different light, while also shoving more focus on them. As for roleplaying (as uncommon as it is in this community), how would your character react to the attempt to finish them off? Would they justify it as a product of bad tech? Would they take it personally?
I think this would be a nice collection of nods to people who played through DUST 514 without giving any significant bonus. The only thing I'd imagine could be an issue in gameplay would be having players in a neutral corp, but I don't think this is a massive deal, and it kind of fits with how DUST was handled, being detatched mercs and all.
I think all I managed to do in my first topic is to ramble. So, to sum it up, DUST transfers would get:
- A unique starter/NPC corp that they're tied to (Arkombine, or something like that)
- A unique skin for their starter suit(s)
- Interesting changes to death & loading screens that don't impact gameplay
