To everyone who is angry about Legion, please take one moment to read this...
DUST 514 is sadly over, and the only chance of a New Eden MMOFPS is in CCP CEO Hilmar's hands on if he green lights Legion or not. DUST is dead regardless, and I know this sounds crazy, but here is why:
A team of 20 developers (at 50k salary each, which is low) is roughly 1 million USD a year. Tack on the UDK3 license fee (25% of earnings after 50k revenue) and server costs and you're looking at $100,000 USD a month easy in costs, and its probably much more. With 5000 active players they would need every single one to spend $20 a month minimum to maybe break even. After taxes, they're still in the red. CCP won't discuss it's finances: DUST is a flop, or at least isn't a good investment.
Which leads us to Valkyrie. DUST was originally green lit years ago to be a way to expand the New Eden IP into a new genre. CCP felt that a MMOFPS was the best. But then DUST wasn't as successful as expected and is losing them money every month. And then suddenly, they lay a golden egg named Valkyrie which has EVERYONE excited and is poised to be a cash cow. There is their New Eden IP. Why wouldn't they cut funding to DUST and pour all that money into Valkyrie? That's the smart investment. There's limited competition, CCP knows spaceships, its NOT a shooter, it's won more awards in Alpha than DUST did ever, and it already has a following 100x larger than DUST. Cutting DUST to further fund Valkyrie is the smart decision.
Which leads us to "Project Legion". I am a contractor in software development. I've worked on many multi-million dollar projects in Oil / Gas and I know a hail mary when I see one. CCP Rouge was probably hired, told "Make DUST profitable in X months" and responded with "impossible, this game needs to be completely rewritten for the PC" and was told by Hilmar that he has until Fanfest to produce a "proof of concept" to pitch the rewrite or the funding goes to Valkyrie. Why else would they show Legion without Hilamr having green lit it? Because it's a hail mary. So Legion is CCP Rouge's answer to the sad state of DUST. "You can't fix an airplane while it's in flight" is a programming adage. And it's true.
So, the grim news is that DUST is probably getting cancelled and Legion is the only hope we have of a New Eden based MMOFPS. What does that mean for you? As much as it sucks to lose the $40 or $200 or $5000 dollars you've put into DUST it's going to suck more for the CCP developers who lose their jobs when DUST is canceled. Their only hope is Legion, hence all the "Tweet Hilmar and tell him to green light Legion" blue posts.
So don't be a deuce and cost real people their jobs because of poor scoping decisions by upper management. Suck it up, the money is gone anyhow, and consider it an investment towards a better New Eden based shooter. If your an exclusive console player who loathes PC then mark it down as a charitable donation on your 2015 tax return.
DUST is dead. Hopefully Legion is given a chance (or all the money is sent to Valkyrie because that game looks f***ing awesome). |

pegasis prime wrote:So... what about folks who bought bpo items in merc packs and elite packs etc .. on the premise of CCP'S premise of a 10 year plan for dust on the consol market .. not everyone is going to buy a gaming rig to play legion in the hopes that their stuff is transfered over. *pat pat* ..?
I also bought the BPO items. Hell, I bought TWO PS3's so that my wife and I could both play DUST. I've probably sunk more money into DUST than most of the people ragebile posting here on these forums. But guess what? Games die.
I personally am excited about Legion. Because it should have been on PC in the first place. Unfortunately, the 100 or so of you who are screaming at the top of your lungs will probably ruin it for everyone because CCP will take your wailing as a "negative reaction" from everyone.
But seriously, if you get this upset over a video game closing and you losing some BPO items then life is going to be rough for you. |

Aszazel wrote:What the fu@k does your post have to do with why we are angry? We are angry because CCP knew they were going to move away from the PS3 to the PC over 3 months ago when CCP RougeDoucheNozzle joined the team to ruin games like he ruined all games at EA. (Mass Effect anyone?) You need to refocus where you are going so you don't go bankrupt? Fine, you need to use us as beta testers for your new game? FINE. BUT how could you FU@KING run back to back to back SP events and put out boosters, omega booster, million clone challenge, sidearm event, orgin event (HEY BUY the orgin pack), THE ENTIRE TIME leading up to the announcement.
We pumped money into this game because we believed CCP was working to bring us fixes to the THOUSANDS of bugs and problems. As SOON as they knew they were going to cancel support for DUST, they should have told us, not tried to bleed us out of every penny they could before they made the announcement. AND THE DELIVERY was the worst part of all, I can't tell you what coming but I am really excited?!!!" THEY DIDN'T EVEN COVER DUST, ONLY LEGION, CAUSE DUST WAS ALREADY DISCONTINUED. It's like my grandmother saying we might*, probably* are going to go out for cake after dinner, and I DRIVE OVER TO HER HOUSE AND SHE IS DEAD.
I'll cede you that point. Yeah, I haven't been around for the past few months playing wise (just had a baby) but I could see how that would royally **** some people off. Douche move CCP.
I'm still excited about Legion, and really excited about Valkyrie, but that is kind of skeezy. |
