This will be a fairly short post. I might right/edit something longer and explain more.
The communication from CCP was fairly awful. Things were confusing to say the least. A lot of people are made that DUST might be getting replaced by CCP. I've met a lot of guys in the console community I wouldn't have otherwise, and it does make me a bit sad that if this continues on to legion, I would not see quite a few of them on PC.
But that's a small part of it. There are two major issues I have.
1) There was extremely little information about DUST 514 presented at fanfest. A majority of the presentation was about Legion. Even the parts I'm fairly sure were about DUST might be about Legion.
2) The DUST 514 Progression and More Sand in the Sandbox for DUST 514 presentations were fairly upsetting. These presentations laid out the vision for DUST. Or maybe Legion. I'm not 100% sure which game those presentations were about. But regardless of which game they were for, the vision isn't what I thought DUST would be from the beginning.
I said this would be short, so without too many details (maybe later,) the entire thing seems like a dumbing down. In the Progression presentation Rouge constantly said that things were too complicated, too hidden, too hard to see, not easily visible, too hard to understand. In fairness, I do come from EVE and am familiar with the concepts, the biggest two of which are SP and Fitting. It sounded like Rouge thinks we're some dumb cave men console players that haven't discovered the wheel, fire, and PC gaming. It gave me the impression that they think EVE is too hard, and DUST needs to be less like EVE and more simple. Since DUST was first announced I imagined the EVE experience as far as it could translate to an FPS environment. Rouge's vision (especially dropsuit and skill progression) takes us further from EVE.
Combined with whoever spoke (don't remember the name, apologies) at the Sandbox presentation, and it almost feels like CCP Shanghai is not only taking the game further away from an EVE like experience, but they actually have no idea that EVE exists. The economy was a big part of the Sandbox presentation. EVE has already solved that problem. CCP knows how to transition an NPC supplied economy to a player supplied economy. They did it with EVE. They need some time to do it in DUST, true, but the presentation gave the impression that CCP had no experience with this.
What's got me frustrated from fanfest is that it feels like CCP Shanghai is ignoring EVE's existence and not taking any of the valuable experience or lessons learned from EVE's 10+ yr history.
