PS4 $399 (at Walmart)
Cost of a PC that runs Unreal 4 Engine (today): $660
This a theoretical build I threw together: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=22254751
And this is based on: https://www.unrealengine.com/faq
Quote:Desktop PC or Mac Windows 7 64-bit or Mac OS X 10.9.2 or later Quad-core Intel or AMD processor, 2.5 GHz or faster NVIDIA GeForce 470 GTX or AMD Radeon 6870 HD series card or higher 8 GB RAM
With the build I listed above, keep in mind that:
1 - The build listed above is a rough estimate. This is for illustrative purposes. Don't go out and buy this. Do research. 2 - The parts used in the build are actually above the requirements quoted above. 3 - I tried to make this "media center friendly". Small case, HDMI port on video card. This limits the options. 4 - Since the case is small, I'm 100% sure every part will fit, but I did my best. 5 - This includes the cost of a Windows 8 OEM license. 6 - This includes a CPU fan. Many CPU's come with a fan, so the extra fan is optional, but recommended. 7 - This does not include a DVD drive. Windows would need be installed via USB stick. 8 - An SSD is used in this build. You can get more capacity more less money using a regular (rotational) drive. 9 - The build listed above is upgradable to at least 16 GB of RAM - Only 2 of the 4 slots are used. 10 - There are many more options of parts to choose from, some of which will increase/decrease the price, depending on what you want/need.
I know that this particular build is about 60% more than a PS4, but there are some things to consider:
- You can get lower spec parts to bring the price down. How to build a gaming PC under $500. - Every part is upgradable, giving your build more longevity than a PS4 which you cannot upgrade. - By the time Legion comes out, these parts will be cheaper, and you can get better parts for the same or less. - We're assuming that Legion will need what is recommended for the Unreal 4 Engine. The PS3 specs are much lower.
So what I'm getting at is a PC can cost as much as a PS4. It can also cost more, but in the long run a PC can last longer as you can upgrade parts. The video card is often the most important piece of a gaming rig. The video card I listed, which is above the recommended specs, is $89. A few years down the road you can spend $89-$150 for a new video card to beef up your rig. And this price range is moderate. A lot of hard core gamers spend $300+ on their video cards alone.
The PS4 is just an overpriced computer that you can't upgrade. Especially since it now shares the same processor architecture as a PC. I know a lot of people are against gaming on the PC... And the initial investment may be higher... But in the long term upgrading parts is far cheaper and gives you more benefits. And you can build a PC that will fit in your living-room and plug it into your TV just as much as the PS4. You can even use a PS3/PS4 controller on the PC, or buy a Logitech controller. Or use a Mouse. Or use a flight stick for those dropships. |

You can buy a gaming rig too, http://www.alienware.com/
If you don't mind paying 50% more. |

That's true. The point isn't "buy this build". I recommend against that. The point is at worst case it would cost ~$600 to build a machine that could run Legion today, assuming that the requirements are what is listed for the Unreal Engine 4. If you have links to better builds, please, by all means share them.
The second point I'm trying to make is that the PS4 is a computer. You can build a PC the same size as the PS4 w/ an HDMI port and be able to use it the same as you would a PS4. You can even use PS3/PS4 controllers, or many other options available to the PC that wouldn't be able to do on the PS4. |

Joseph Ridgeson wrote:The concern has very little to do with "I can't afford a PC" and more along the lines of "Did CCP just bait and switch me?" There are people out there that are getting screwed by the Legion PC bit, which sucks, but most of the vitriol is over the DUST 514 keynote, progression, and sandbox presentations being about a different product that isn't even green lit yet. Big, obvious questions like "What about my SP?", "What about my AUR purchases?" were not answered and still don't seem to have an answer short of "we don't want to leave anyone behind."
Here comes the disgusting thing: what happens if Legion doesn't go through? They just announced "we cannot do what we wanted to do on the PS3 so we are moving on to the PC" in front of the gaming world. If Legion dies a quite death behind the scenes or Hilmar cuts its head off like it is a Stark at a public display, what does that mean for the game they just said could not be what they wanted it to be? Should we just fudge off and die?
I totally get that and I agree. That is my #1 concern about Legion as well. The post was meant for people who say they won't play Legion because they won't game on a PC. The thing is a PS4 is a PC too (technically). And I'm not saying go out a buy one now - That would be foolish. |

It's been like that since the beginning. PCs are far more versatile, of course, but most people don't really like to do much beyond look at the price tag and plug n play. no you twit, most people moved because they want to relax on the sofa and use a controller with a driver that works. raises a real question: does anyone know of a good controller which is likely to work flawlessly? (Avoiding keyboard and mouse).
You can use a PS3 / PS4 controller on a PC. |

I updated my initial post. If anyone has more experience in building a PC gaming rig I will update my initial post with that build. My goals for a build are:
- Cost is between $400-500 - Slim form-factor - The size of the PS4 approx. - HDMI port for plugging into the TV. - Meets recommended requirements for Unreal 4. - Is capable of using PS3 / PS4 controllers (although admittedly I left out bluetooth). - Will last long enough and be upgradable enough to run Legion with future updates.
Clearly I did not meet these goals as well as I had hoped.
I know there are far more concerns with Legion than switching platforms. My concerns are about SP transfers. I just wanted to show other players that had concerns about console that they can build a PC console. They don't need to sit at a desk in-front of a monitor.. They can build a rig that sits in their living-room and sit on the couch with their feet kicked up just as well. |

1.) Equal or greater power than a PS4 2.) <$550USD price tag for the whole package(shipping included) 3.) Bluray Drive 4.) HDMI port 5.) Small size (doesn't need to be tiny like a PS4, but small enough that you can take it places easily and without hassle) 6.) Dualshock 4 price included (+$60) Sixaxis support as well. 7.) Comes with 1 new AAA title(+$45) 8.) A decent mouse keyboard will be required for doing non-gaming activities(+ aprox. $30) 9.) Capture Card.(Share button yo!) 10.) Runs "Legion"
These next two three may be a bit difficult. 11.) Runs PlayStation's Exclusive titles such as Killzone and Gran Turismo, titles that I am a fan of. 12.) Still runs brand new games in 5-7 years without needing to be upgraded. 13.) For an extra $20ish it comes with full part failure coverage for 2 years.
If your magical box meets all of these requirements, I'll get a PC.
I hope now you guys can see why consoles are what some people want.
You do know that Sony sells their consoles at a loss and make up for it by selling overpriced games? And you can probably get rather close to that now. In a year a build at the same price will far surpass the PS4 hardware. With a decent PC you can at least spend $100 to upgrade it to play current stuff. New games on the PS4 are restricted to limited hardware.
