The problem is my playstyle is locked, at least by the presentation. I run mass driver scouts, I now have to go into demo logi, which I don't want.

I think you have it all wrong... Here are 3 things they stated in the second presentation:
1. They want new players to have a smaller amount of choices when skilling into a dropsuit or role. In other words, each path down a "role" will have weapon unlocks that best fit that role. It doesn't mean that you have to be a logi to use mass drivers, but that mass drivers wil be unlocked from the logi tree now instead of the light weapons tree.
This is just an added layer of NPE so that it is easy to skill into role related items that wil make fitting easier for new players.
2. Skilling into "counters" (i.e. fittings that counter other fittings), will take hours rather than months. One of the crucial points made was that they want to make the basic parts of the skill tree (unlocking the rudimentary items) very easy to do. So while it might seem that mass drivers might take a few million skill points just to get to, you're probably looking at 100k at most.
3. They also stated that specific weapon variants will be unlocked in specific trees. For example, the assault variants will all be in the assault tree. I'm guessing that includes the assault mass driver. The breach mass driver might be under demolitions logi, while the standard would just be a straight up support weapon and be under the support logistics tree. Instead of one skill that takes 5 levels and 600k sp to max, there will be 3-5 mass driver unlocks that let you skill into the specific types you want without wasting sp on items you will never use.
Just look at the new roles tree as a very handy NPE tool. I've been wanting something like this in the game forever (I came up with the idea for some sort of fitting builder that would tell you which skills to go into, this is just a more elegant design), but it will probably not prevent any verterans like us from skilling into what we want to.
Just remember, the racial choice now comes AFTER the role choice. The whole point of this is to get players to understand what all there is to offer in the game in an easy to understand and simple skill tree. Right now it just takes too much dedication to get into a single role, and new players can too easily make the wrong decisions.
